Event description

Description

The California Naturalist Program seeks to foster a committed corps of volunteer naturalists and citizen scientists trained and ready to take an active role in natural resource conservation, education, and restoration. The California Naturalist course by Dry Creek Conservancy will introduce you to the wonders of our local ecology and engage you in the stewardship of California’s natural communities. The course will combine a junior college level introductory science course curriculum with guest lecturers, field trips, and project based learning to immerse you in the natural world of California with a focus on the American River Basin Watershed.

The number of registered participants is capped at 30. Registration fees are tiered ranging from is $300.00 to $350.00 plus fees through EventBrite or can be paid via check to avoid fees. Current and recent students may be elegible for a reduced registration fee or scholarship based on need. (Contact the event organizer).

After April 12 registration fees increase by $25.00 for each category.

Upon fulfilling graduation requirements and volunteer service, participants become certified as California Naturalists and are eligibile for an optional four UC Davis Extension Academic Credits for an additional fee paid directly to UC Davis.

The class will be held on 10 Wednesday evenings over 10 weeks, April 25th to June 27th, from 6:00 pm – 8:30 pm. Evening classes meet at the 333 Sunrise Avenue, Roseville, California 95661, in room 725 unless otherwise noted. (This location is the former Roseville Gate Way Campus)

Parking is located in the lot off of Frances Drive. Use the Aloha entrance to get to the classroom.

In preparation for lectures, all assigned readings from the California Naturalist Handbook, and the UCANR California Naturalist Series publication 8535, "Natural History of the Sierra Nevada,” should be completed before each class where they appear on the syllabus. Evening classes during the course will be a mix of lecture, discussion, and some outdoor exploration. Dress appropriately for the weather – we might have a chance to go outside at a moment’s notice to take a quick field trip to Dry Creek or a local park!

Field Trips

There will be a minimum of three Saturday Field trips. Some trips will start around 7:00 – 9:00 am and end around 12:00 – 2:00 pm and some may start at 1:00 pm and end around 4 pm. We will meet at the field trip site and information about when and where to go will be sent out to you before the trip. Participants may not bring guests, children, or pets on any field trips. A schedule will be provided before the first day of class.

Refunds for cancelled registration are allowed up to one week prior to the event minus a $50 processing fee. Please contact the course organizer to request refund.
