Event Details

The 2018 Book Publishers Association of Alberta Conference and Annual General Meeting provides an opportunity for Alberta book publishers to meet, network, and develop their professional skills.

Conference registration includes:

  • access to all conference sessions
  • meals and snacks during the conference
  • opening reception on Thursday September 13
  • single admission to the 2018 Alberta Book Publishing Awards on the evening of September 14

Highlights of the conference this year include:

Publishers as Power Brokers (keynote) by Chelsea Vowel (apihtawikosisan.com)

Chelsea Vowel is a Métis writer and lawyer from near Lac Ste. Anne, Alberta whose work focuses on language, gender identity, and resurgence. She has been published in the Huffington Post, The National Post and The Globe and Mail. Vowel is well known for her work promoting the protection and preservation of Indigenous languages in Canada. In 2016, she released her first book, Indigenous Writes: A Guide to First Nations, Métis & Inuit Issues in Canada, a collection of essays aimed at explaining indigenous Canadian issues to non-indigenous people.

Rates listed are exclusive of applicable federal, provincial and local taxes (which currently include a 3%
Destination Marketing Fee, 4% Tourism Levy and 5% GST).

Conference attendees travelling from outside of Calgary may be eligible for a subsidy for accommodation and travel expenses. Please visit our website to apply. Conference fees are not eligible for subsidy.

Beverages (alcoholic and non-) are not included with conference registration.

The Book Publishers Association of Alberta was founded in 1975 to support the development of a thriving provincial publishing industry, away from Canada’s traditional book publishing centres. One of the strongest communities of regional publishers in North America today, the BPAA counts 29 member companies, most of which are owned and operated in Alberta.
