Event description

Experience Some of America’s Most Diverse Flower Fields, Right in the Heart of Wisconsin

Two hours west of Madison, Wisconsin, tucked away in the hills of the unglaciated Driftless Region, is a flower farm that grows an enormous variety of specialty flowers and fruiting and decorative branches. Star Valley Flowers, a large farm in the heart of the Kickapoo Valley in southwest Wisconsin, will host the American Grown Field to Vase Dinner Tour on Sept. 8, 2018. This is your once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet flower farmer John Zehrer, learn about his farm and enjoy an artisan dinner among fields of blooming flowers in one of the most beautiful and productive parts of the country.

Your Experience

Your dinner experience will include a feast for the eyes thanks to the innovative tablescapes featuring farm-fresh flowers designed by a renowned American floral designer.

Whether you’re coming from Madison, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, Des Moines or Chicago, this farm is worth the short drive to enjoy a multi-course artisanal meal alongside flower aficionados like yourself, while learning about the value of buying and supporting Certified American Grown Flowers.

The Flowers

In the early years, crops at the farm, including sunflowers, zinnias, ageratum and amaranthus, were sold at farmers’ markets, which provided flower farmer John with a base of products that enabled him to branch out and try more unusual plants. Before long, he added willow varieties, hydrangeas, lilacs and bittersweet, quickly amplifying Star Valley Flowers’ reputation as a source for hard-to-find and novelty flowers.

Today, well over 200 acres of the farm are planted with deciduous shrubs such as spirea, lilacs, hydrangeas, snowball and cranberry viburnums, numerous willows, twig dogwood, Ilex verticillata, mock orange, ninebark, forsythia and the ever-popular bittersweet.

Star Valley is a major supplier to the Chicago market, wholesalers and forward-thinking retailers nationwide. The emphasis is on creating local farm connections for consumers through large retailers like Whole Foods, Hy-Vee and other regional chains.

The Flower Farm

John always had a love for horticulture – even as a child he sold plants he had propagated. The son of a dairy farmer, John was first a commercial beekeeper in California and Minnesota. In 1983, he moved to Wisconsin and started a dairy before turning to flower farming in 1986 with just two acres planted.

Today, the farm features a whopping 200 acres of flowers and is the largest entirely field-grown cut flower producer in the Midwest – with no greenhouses, minimized fossil fuel use, and stringent soil conservation practices for its hilly terrain. Even in the depths of a Wisconsin winter, the farm is busy harvesting, forcing and shipping forsythia and willows.

Star Valley’s customer base includes floral wholesalers, retail grocers, garden centers, floral designers, landscapers and event planners.

An Extra Tour with Farmer John

If you’d like to dig deeper into the dedication and science behind growing the flowers, you don’t want to miss the added VIP Farm Tour, available for purchase upon Eventbrite checkout. The VIP Farm Tour is an exclusive opportunity for a handful of guests to join flower farmer John Zehrer for an hour-long tour of Star Valley Flowers. The extra VIP tour will take place prior to the start of the event and includes a VIP reception.

There are just 200 seats at the table and they will sell out months in advance, so reserve your seat today!
