He was the founder of BridgeEdU, an innovative platform to address the college completion and job placement crisis. He hosts Oprah Winfrey Network’s “Beyond Belief” and PBS’ “American Graduate Day.” He and his work have been featured by USA Today, People MagazineNBC News, NPR, “Meet the Press,” “The Colbert Report,” “The View,” and many others.

Wes grew up in Baltimore and the Bronx. Despite childhood challenges, he graduated Phi Theta Kappa from Valley Forge Military College and Phi Beta Kappa from Johns Hopkins. A Rhodes Scholar, he earned a master of letters in international relations from Oxford University. Wes served as a captain and paratrooper with the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne, including a combat deployment to Afghanistan. He later served as a White House Fellow to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

Morning Speaker Christal Jackson

Nearly seven years ago, Christal M. Jackson founded Head and Heart Philanthropy, a social impact agency focused on improving social, economic and educational outcomes for communities of color. Recently, she was recognized by Essence Magazine for her ability to convene and curate the best and brightest in this sector.

Christal also is the founder of Mosaic Genius, which is focused on building a sustainable ecosystem for wealth-building in communities of color around the world.

Philanthropy Matchmaker

Drawing on the success of the 2016 Philanthropy Tank, Philanthropy Matchmaker requires two nonprofits to join forces, in a creative way, to bolster an existing or new endeavor that furthers their respective missions. Each collaborative team will have an opportunity to present their case for support. After hearing the presentations, Summit attendees will vote for the winner of a $5,000 first-place cash award and tiered cash awards for second- and third-place teams.

Attendees also will have the opportunity to dive deeper into the Philanthropy Makers in their area interest. Options include Arts and Culture, Economic Development, and Education. Attendees will pick their preferred category during online registration.

JumpStart Inc. Presentation

Gain insight on creating a philanthropic movement from individuals and nonprofits who are seeing success from joining together to accomplish a shared mission. JumpStart’s mission is to unlock the full potential of diverse and ambitious entrepreneurs to economically transform communities.
