Community Action Coalition for South Central Wisconsin

This coalition works to eliminate poverty through many programs including financial and housing assistance, a clothing center, family support programs, community gardens, and the food pantry network. Volunteers will work in the clothing center, food warehouse & on outside maintenance.

 Goodman Community Center

The center offers programs to help preschoolers through teenagers succeed in school and life, meals and social activities to keep older adults healthy and connected, enrichment activities for adults and a food pantry. Volunteers will be cleaning and organizing the preschool room, afterschool room & the gymnasium to get it ready for summer camp.

 Goodman Youth Farm

The Goodman Youth Farm engages a diverse population of students in hands-on, farm-based education. Youth are actively involved in the entire process of running a small-scale organic farm; from planting and harvesting to cooking with the produce they grow. Each year youth farmers weigh, wash, and donate hundreds of pounds of produce to local food pantries. The Youth Farm is a program of the non-profit Community GroundWorks. Possible projects include weeding, prepping garden beds, creating pathways, and other gardening projects.

 Oakwood Village- University Woods

Oakwood Village University Woods Retirement Community is a continuing care retirement community that has independent living apartments, assisted living, memory care and skilled nursing care for older adults.  Volunteers will be outside staining.

 River Food Pantry

This is Dane County’s busiest food pantry offering free groceries, meals, and clothing to anyone who comes for help. They feed about 600 families per week, going through over 25,000 pounds of food every seven days. Volunteers will help clean facilities, stock shelves and sort clothing.

 Salvation Army of Dane County

This corps of the Salvation Army includes a family shelter, a food pantry, a free community meal site, a single women’s shelter, youth activities, emergency services and more. Volunteers help with site maintenance and cleaning.

Participants will work in the Arboretum’s Longenecker Horticultural Gardens, home to renowned crabapple, conifer, and lilac collections. They will be pulling weeds and spreading mulch to beautify the gardens and improve the well being of the trees and shrubs. All tools and training will be provided.
