Event description

Description

For 27 years, the New Mexico Foundation for Open Government has championed the public's right to access public documents and meetings.

We've had lots of help along the way. To recognize transparency champions who advocate for open government in the areas of business, law, education, government, journalism and civic engagement, we created the presitigous William S. Dixon First Amendement Freedom Awards in 2002 to honor FOG co-founder, the late Albuquerque Attorney Bill Dixon.

Celebrate 2017 Winners

Winners will be announced at the end of August and you're invited to honor their record of accomplishment using New Mexico’s sunshine laws to advance government transparency, hold the powerful accountable, inspire civic engagement, and educate the public about their rights to know the affairs of government.

Join us on Wednesday, October 4, 11:30 am to 1:00 pm at at the Embassy Suites, 1000 Woodward Place, NE, in Albuquerque.

Individual tickets, $60, are on sale here today. Sponsor a table for 10, $600.

FOG Selects Pulitzer Prize Winner as Featured Speaker

James Neff Photo

James Neff, the Philadelphia Media Group’s deputy managing editor for investigations and projects, will be this year’s featured speaker.

Neff, who served at the chair of this year’s Pulitzer award selection committee, previously led investigative reporting for the Seattle Times. He served on the board of the Investigative Reporters and Editors for a decade, including one term as president.

He is the author of several nonfiction books, one of which was adapted for an HBO film. He has also won several open government awards for his work as a First Amendment and public records advocate.

Under First Amendment protections, Neff successfully protected research he had done to write a book about a 1950s murder. Ohio prosecutors had issued a subpoena for his documents, arguing any First Amendment issues “must be subordinated to our search for the truth.”

Tickets are on sale now. Proceeds from the 2017 Dixon Award Luncheon benefit the New Mexico Foundation for Open Government, a 501(c)(3) New Mexican nonprofit corporation.

For sponsorship information, call FOG Executive Director Peter St. Cyr, (505) 764-3750.

We look forward to seeing you at lunch.
