FAQs

Who can participate?

WMYFI is open to middle and high school aged students. Any student currently enrolled in grades 6-12 is eligible to participate.

When and where does WMYFI take place?

The program takes place on Saturday and Sunday, November 4 and 5, 2017 from 9:00AM - 4:00PM. William & Mary’s Reeder Media Center located on the ground floor of Swem Library will host the program. Students will need to arrive between 8:30-9:00AM and be picked up between 4:00-4:30PM each day.

What will students do and learn during the workshops?

The workshops are lead by W&M Film and Media Studies faculty and students and will provide an overview of the filmmaking process and give participants hands-on experience. The full program schedule is available here.

Why is there a charge for registration?

Funds collected from ticket sales will be used for workshop supplies, lunches and snacks, and the rental of Kimball Theatre for the WMYFI film screening. Eight needs-based scholarships are available if the ticket price is a barrier.

How can I apply for a needs-based scholarship and how will the scholarships be awarded?

The needs-based scholarships will be awarded through a lottery system. Eight scholarships are available and will cover 100% of program costs. The scholarship application deadline is October 29 at 11:00PM. All students who apply for a scholarship will be notified of the lottery results on October 30. More information and the application form can be found here.

Why is WMYFI limited to 50 students?

William & Mary’s Reeder Media Center, the workshop host, can accommodate a limited number of participants – in terms of space, staff, and equipment availability. Fifty students is the maximum amount that can be accommodated while still providing a meaningful and educational experience with available resources.

Will lunch and snacks be provided?

Yes. All participants will be provided with a boxed lunch and healthy snacks throughout the day during the program on Saturday and Sunday, November 4-5. Any dietary restrictions should be noted when purchasing a ticket or applying for a needs-based scholarship.

Does my student need to provide any equipment or supplies?

No. Student participants do not need to provide any equipment or supplies. All materials will be provided during the weekend, including all filmmaking equipment, as donated by the W&M Reeder Media Center at Swem Library.

When can I see my student's film?

All student films will be screened at Kimball Theatre on Sunday, November 12, 2017 at 7:00pm. All of the films will also be available on the WMYFI website for online viewing following the public screening.

How do I get tickets to the screening?

The screening is free and no ticket is required. Doors to the theatre open 30 minutes prior to the screening and seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
