Recordings of 2017 Series: Nonprofit Finance Fundamentals Part 1: Tools to Promote Financial Adaptability

In case you missed it live, you can still take advantage of webinars from our 2017 Webinar Series: Nonprofit Finance Fundamentals Part 1: Tools to Promote Financial Adaptability.  Your order will include both a recording and downloadable PPT slides.

Webinar 1: The Nonprofit Landscape: Adapting Amid Uncertainty

Aired February 14, 2017

The future funding and policy landscape is uncertain. But there are steps that nonprofits can take to prepare themselves for change. This 60-minute webinar begins with an understanding of the upside-down “money rules” in our sector, such as revenue restrictions and disjointed business models. NFF then explores the true keys to “financial stability,” which are derived from the ability to make nimble, data-informed decisions and willingness to adapt—all with a clear understanding of your constituents, community, funders, partners and market.

Webinar 2: Assessing Nonprofit Financial Health

Aired February 21, 2017

To make good decisions, leaders not only need accurate, up-to-date, and clear financial information, but also the ability to interpret and use this data to inform decision making. The first step is a comprehensive understanding of baseline financial indicators and health. This 60-minute webinar explores the fundamentals of nonprofit finance so that nonprofit leaders and managers feel better equipped to interpret nonprofit financial statements (particularly the income statement and balance sheet) and assess their organizations’ financial position.

Webinar 3: Budgeting as a Communication Tool

Aired February 28, 2017

The budget is an essential tool when charting your organization’s future path. This 60-minute webinar provides nonprofit leaders with a review of key budget terms and concepts and demystifies the budgeting process by focusing on the essential nonprofit budget, which clearly depicts the organization’s financial story. Although the content is designed for beginners, it is not a “how to” guide for creating a line item budget. Instead, we focus on preparing a budget that appropriately communicates the organization’s true financial needs. The webinar concludes with more advanced budgeting concepts, such as covering full costs and including balance sheet items.

Webinar 4: Assessing Program Profitability

Aired March 7, 2017

Every program impacts your organization's bottom line. Making informed decisions about critical issues like hiring or fundraising requires a clear understanding or each program's profit or loss. Is it inherently profitable? Does it require subsidy? How does it fit together financially with other programs? NFF’s unique Program Profitability Model provides a clear-sighted way for nonprofit managers to answer these questions as they work to change and adapt in real time. Through a case study framework, this 60-minute webinar will explain how participants can use a program economic assessment to make adjustments and improve financial health for maximum mission impact.

Webinar 5: Planning for a Range of Scenarios

Aired March 14, 2017

The act of scenario planning can be a powerful way to prepare for what lies ahead, particularly when the future seems uncertain. At NFF, scenario planning balances exploration and dialogue with a tools-driven approach. As such, this 60-minute webinar introduces participants to several ways of planning and uses a drivers-based approach to assess revenue and expenses. Key topics covered by presenters include the assessment of risk and how to prepare for multiple outcomes, during a single-year or multiple-year period.

Webinar 6: Managing to a Dashboard

Aired March 21, 2017

Increasingly popular among nonprofit boards, a dashboard is a reporting tool for communicating with an organization’s key stakeholders and leadership about core indicators of success related to: mission and outcomes, staffing, and resource needs. In this 60-minute webinar, NFF will discuss how to engage your organization in thoughtful and relevant conversations about its financial situation, needs, challenges and opportunities before it reaches a crisis point. Participants will explore two types of organizational dashboards that help to measure progress against goals and manage uncertainty.

Full Series: Includes All 6 Webinars in the Series, as described above
