Setting the world on fire: Service as the fuel of Wahyanites' life journey

About the Wah Yan International conference (Reunion)

A year after the successful launching of the Student Ambassador Programme, WYHKPSA organised the 1st International Conference in 1988. Launched in Hong Kong, it was attended by over a hundred local and overseas alumni. It was resolved that a Wah Yan International Conference (WYIC) would be held on a biennial basis.

WYIC has four objectives:

  • To provide fellowship opportunities between local and overseas Wahyanites.

  • To allow Wah Yan alumni all over the World to better understand the well being of each other.

  • To keep alumni informed about both Wah Yan Colleges in Hong Kong and Kowloon.

  • To explore possible improvements on our Global Link Networking.

Program overview:

San Francisco Bay Area Chapter has the honor to host the 15th Wah Yan International Conference/Reunion in July 2017. This 2-day conference will be held at University of San Francisco, a Jesuit University, where Wahyanites gather together to learn about the latest WYK and WYHK news from our two alma maters and the Jesuit Fathers, as well as updates from all other overseas Wah Yan alumni chapters. Beside the conference, there will be several spousal activities (e.g. gala dinner, San Francisco dinner cruise, Napa Valley wine tour, etc.) organized by the Chapter, which provide Wanyanites and their guests an opportunity to check out San Francisco Bay Area. For anyone who is/are interested in further exploring the West Coast, we are organizing a 6-day road tour beginning from Napa Valley and traveling all the way to Vancouver, Canada.

From Wah Yan San Francisco chapter:
"We’d like to invite you to the conference (7/21-23). It’s a big social event attended by WYHK and WYK alumni from the past 60+ years. I expect over 100 of them will come. You can find some preliminary information at the website. The conference this year is co-hosted by the Ricci Institute for Chinese-Western Cultural History at the University of San Francisco. There will be scholars showing us the work at the Ricci Institute. It includes a Ming Dynasty collection of the late Fr. Albert Chan, SJ (1915-2005). Fr. Chan was an alum of WYHK. Our conference theme is “Setting the world on fire: service as the fuel of Wahyanites’ life journey”. The keynote speaker is the COO of the Global Social Benefit Institute (GSBI) programs of the Miller Center for Social Entrepreneurship at the Santa Clara University. So both Jesuit Universities in the San Francisco Bay Area will participate in our conference. It will be a memorable event."

Father Albert Chan, S.J
Fr. Albert Chan is the first HKWY student ordained as a Jesuit Priest in Ireland. He is a scholar and obtained a Ph D in Chinese History from Harvard. He spoke 10 languages and worked in the Vatican translating correspondence in various languages. He was involved in teaching in HK from 1954-1969

About University of San Francisco and the Ricci Institute for Chinese-Western Cultural History

University of San Francisco (USF) — a premier Jesuit university — is located in San Francisco, California, United States. Its close historical ties with the City and County of San Francisco are reflected in the University's traditional motto, Pro Urbe et Universitate (For the City and University). USF's Jesuit Catholic identity is rooted in the vision and work of St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuit order. The 2017 Wah Yan International Conference will be co-hosted by the USF Ricci Institute for Chinese-Western Cultural History. Founded in 1984, the USF Ricci Institute is a unique global resource for the study of Chinese-Western cultural exchange with a core focus on the social and cultural history of Christianity in China. The Ricci Institute strives to approach Chinese-Western interaction in the spirit of friendship and respect exemplified by the Institute’s namesake, Matteo Ricci, the 16th-century Italian Jesuit who lived in China. The Institute promotes interdisciplinary academic research through publications, scholarship programs, and community outreach events. It also provides access to library and archival materials in Chinese and Western languages with a wide range of materials on the history of cultural interactions between China and the West.
