2017 US-China New Energy Economy Forum is hosted by BAIC BJEV, Gotion, and Columbia University. The forum will be held on November 16th to 17th in San Jose, California. Participants will have opportunities to learn and discuss cooperation and development in the field of clean energy, especially the innovation and applications of EV and energy storage. During the forum, you can also to join nearby events in Santa Clara Convention Center including EV, renewable energy, energy storage, and IoT in November 15th to 16th, and the 60th San Francisco Auto Show in Moscone Center from November 18th to 26th.

Opening Session:
Revisit U.S. – China Relations and the Ten-Year Framework for Energy and Environment Cooperation

During the first round of U.S.-China Comprehensive Economic Dialogue this July, Vice Premier Wang Yang pointed out that, as world’s two largest economies, a good cooperation between U.S. and China will not only benefit the corporates and people of the two countries, but also benefit the welfare of the world. Cooperation is the only correct option for the two. Meanwhile, we are also entering the last year of “the Ten-Year Framework for Energy and Environment Cooperation”. Reviewing the past ten years, U.S. and China have been profoundly fruitful in their cooperation in energy and environment under this framework, especially for their achievement in energy efficiency and vehicle electrification. Today, we come together to revisit the success of this cooperation, and envision the new challenges and opportunities for the cooperation in the next decade.

Session 1: Global Vision – Automotive in Transition

In 2017, the global EV market is still on the ascendant. To fulfill “The Paris Agreement”, France, Germany, Norway, Netherland, U.K., and India have all proposed plans to ban sales of new gasoline and diesel cars in recent future. The EV markets in U.S. and China are also burgeoning. The emergence of new car manufacturers further advances the competition of vehicle electrification; the rise and fall of oil price also influences the reform of the complete vehicle industry chain; fast development of battery technology and the tightening emission standards are revolutionizing the car industry; the rise of autonomous vehicle and sharing economy are turning future cars into “computer on the wheels”. The past glorious internal combustion engine has shaped our modern life, but it is also reaching the end of its life. Under such circumstance, a global vision will bring the global EV market a more organic development and prosperity. But, as the Economist reminds, “it will be a bumpy road. Buckle up.”

Session 2: National Ambitions – Road to Zero Emission

2017, China has already become the leader of the development of global EV and battery market. China’s gross EV sales in 2017 will reach 750,000 cars, which is almost half of EV sales worldwide. The markets for passenger cars and commercial cars are both growing. Besides the rise of China’s domestic car brands, leading multinational car manufacturers also setup joint venture factories in China one after another. From Volkswagen’s cooperation with JAC to Ford and Zotye’s joint venture, and to Daimler’s strategic investment in BJEV, these all injected great confidence to China’s EV market. In U.S., GM and Tesla have also launched their champion models, aiming to broaden current EV market. In 2017, the shipment volume of China power battery takes up nearly 70% of the world total amount, but we are still concerned about problems like technology path, production capacity, product quality and safety, the future development. With improving government policies, and technology upgrade of the entire industry chain for car, battery, and vehicle electronics, and charging station manufacturers, the future development of U.S. and China local clean energy vehicle industry will be spectacular.

Session 3: Diverse Development – Energy Storage as a Service

The fast expansion of global EV market has given rise to large scale of technology innovation and the scale-up of power battery industry. While the development of battery recycling and gradient utilization will lower the cost of battery for storage, we should still map out plans for solution to the problems it brings. The introduction and popularization of battery storage system, the integration of storage system with solar and wind power generation, the rise of micro-grid and smart distributed energy system, and the promotion of hybrid wind and solar self-generation model, shall bring in a more diverse development to the new energy industry, as well as to form a delicate relation between the customers and utility companies. This will facilitate the further transition and upgrade of the entire upstream and downstream of new energy industry. When the photovoltaic industry is looking for new opportunity for growth, the integration of solar photovoltaic and energy storage pointed out the potential market direction. However, it still worth to discuss on how energy storage industry could continue to grow when incentives are limited and decreasing.
