8:30-9:00 The Community Forest Challenge
Are Nebraska community forest in trouble? Inventory work over the past 6 years indicates that our forests are in decline. We will relate some of the recent inventory information and how it impacts our forests. With information in hand, what is the role of participants to make a positive change for the future?
9:00-9:45 Biochar 101
Needing solutions to urban soil damage, high pH or fertility? Biochar may be an option. Learn more about biochar, how it is made, and what it can be used for, with a focus on horticultural and urban applications.
10:00-11:30 TreeMendous Discussions
A small group activity focused on tree selection and design with some “treevia” thrown in for fun.
11:30-12:00 Protecting the root zone during construction
Damage to roots during construction put tremendous stress on trees. Learn best management practices for protecting trees and their roots during construction.
12:00-12:45 Lunch (included with regisration)
12:45-1:30 Environmental Issues of Trees
Over the years, drought, untimely freezes, and other tough environmental conditions have beleaguered our landscape trees. Join us as we explore the impacts of these assaults on our trees.
1:30-3:00 Introduction to Urban Wood Utilization
Learn the basics of utilizing urban wood: best practices for harvesting, milling, drying and opportunities for wood products. Portable saw mill will be on site to demonstrate use and show beauty of urban hardwoods.
3:00-3:30 Trees in the News and Wrap-up
