Purpose: This year’s symposium will focus on the critical need of interprofessional collaboration to enhance the quality and safety of patient care and provide practitioners with clinically relevant information and educational resources for evidence-based practice in the assessment and treatment of trauma patients.

Objectives: At the end of this program, the participants should be able to:

Session I

  • Discuss the challenges of being The Surgeon General, including contemporary challenges to trauma surgeons and systems

Session II

  • Discuss the history of military medicine and surgery, lessons learned and current emerging new technology and medical treatments of wounds resulting from combat
  • Identify new resuscitation treatment paradigms in the management of the bleeding trauma patient
  • Describe the complex surgery typically used to correct abdominal weaknesses caused by open wounds

Session III

  • Outline the diagnostic challenges related to rare vascular injuries and the importance of a detailed vascular examination
  • Describe multidisciplinary approaches in the treatment of pelvic fractures for improved outcomes in patients with these complex injuries
  • Discuss the timeline of the evolving epidemiology of multiple systems organ failure (MSOF), the emergence of the Persistent Inflammation, Immunosuppression, Catabolism Syndrome (PICS) and ongoing research and potential therapeutic interventions for PICS

Session IV

  • Describe key issues and challenges in caring for critical care patients in rural hospitals
  • Identify the clinical profile of anticoagulation agents, reversal agents and treatment strategies in the face of major bleeding
  • Discuss the initial evaluation and management of the burn patient to help minimize suffering and optimize results

Session V

  • Describe the care of a trauma patient from time of the injury through the rehabilitation process, describe the integration of the multiple services from field care, transport care, integration of multiple hospitals in the care of complex trauma patients, and post discharge care
  • Discuss tourniquet use in the field as a means of hemorrhage control
  • Review the psychological effects of major trauma on a patient and the patient’s family
