2017 Think Regional Southwest Ohio Summit
Fri, April 28, 2017, 7:30 AM – 3:00 PM EDT
The three pillars of the Think Regional mission are to help facilitate collaborations across the 15 Counties in SouthWest Ohio, in order to achieve: (1) greater economic growth, (2) more higher-paying, career-oriented jobs, and (3) improved quality of life.
One of the 6 key drivers of these results that have been identified by the attendees at our previous summits is a Skilled and Educated Workforce. There are currently 127,000 jobs listed on the OhioMeansJobs website that are unfilled. On this issue, Think Regional is working to build understanding that a workforce available to fill skilled technology jobs in modern manufacturing industries is equally important as a workforce of highly educated employees. This will be a major focus of the 2017 Summit.
Our two morning panels will share existing and planned collaborations for economic and job growth between major Chambers of Commerce organizations in our region, and between major educational institutions providing the training for the skilled and educated workforce we need. Our lunch speakers, both Ohio natives, will provide insights into some of the challenges involved in equipping young people with a preference for technical and skilled careers, and re-orienting displaced workers from industries like coal mining or traditional manufacturing, to succeed in the higher-paying skilled technology jobs that are going unfilled. These speakers will include Mr. Phil DeVol who is a co-author of "Bridges Out of Poverty", and Mr. J.D. Vance, author of the New Yorks Times best-selling book "Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis".
In the afternoon our Issue Action Group sessions will be structured this year after the National Issues Forum format they have developed and use to faciltate open discussions and dialogues on key issues, via a process they describe as "deliberative decision making". This format will be described for us by Dr. Bill Muse, who is President Emeritus of the National Issues Forum Institute, a part of the Kettering Foundation.
Following the Summit, we plan to have a reception and book signing with our lunch speakers.
Please join us for a most important day of discussion and actions to help continue growth in our region.
