Event description

Description

Come join us again for what is becoming an annual special needs indoor trick or treat!

Halloween can be scary, busy, and full of treats that kids with special needs can't eat. Some kids who can't speak or who have problems interacting might be too shy to participate in public trick or treating. Others might not want to wear a costume. On top of that, it's easy for kids with special needs to "age out" of traditional trick or treating when their disability is invisible.

The event will be held at Helen Hall Library in League City in the theater. The location is wheelchair accessible. Please note that while we are at the library, they *are not* hosting the event and cannot answer questions about it. Contact me directly for any assistance or questions.

Trick or treaters will be given small toys and prizes that are appropriate for ages 3 and up, and there will not be any candy or other food products (due to the food restrictions that so many special needs children have).

In addition to the trick or treating, some arts and crafts will be available. At this time, we are working on getting a professional photographer to volunteer their services. If you know of a photographer who would be interested, please let me know.

*Please note that at this time, siblings without special needs cannot participate due to limited funds.

FAQs

Hopefully this will answer all the questions people have, but if there’s anything I’ve missed, please feel free to ask me by sending me an email to ksanger@fromtheasylum.com. Thanks!

Does my child need to have an offical diagnosis?
No. Any disability that would interfere with taking part in traditional trick or treating means that you’re welcome.

Are siblings allowed?
Sorry, but not this time. I’m financing this mostly by myself (but asking for minor donations), and we are unable to afford more than 100 children. We want to make sure that the kids with special needs aren’t left out. On the plus side, it is in a library, so the typical siblings can find plenty of other fun things to do during the trick or treating.

What ages are allowed?
I know that I put “kids” in the title, but kids come in all ages. As long as the “kid” is interested and has special needs, they’re invited. There is no cut-off age or age limits.

Can I help my kid?
Yes! The children don't need to be verbal or able to hold their trick or treat bags.

Do I need to live in League City to attend?
Nope! You don’t have to live here in League City to attend. It’s being held at the League City library, but it’s a private event, and there are no restrictions as to where you need to live in order to attend.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?
Yes, please do bring your tickets. Since the event needs to be controlled in terms of numbers, we would like to make sure that only those who pre-register attend.

Can I volunteer at the event?
Yes, if you would like to man a table, please contact Kate at ksanger@fromtheasylum.com. If you are at a table, you do not need to bring your own toys to give out. Toys will be provided to all volunteers.
