Event description

Description

School librarians have always been in the center of combating literacy challenges. That role is more important now than ever—as the crisis in information literacy calls for innovation in how we teach it to foster an ever more information savvy, literate generation.

The 13th annual SLJ Leadership Summit: Confronting Our Literacy Crisis will bring together a dynamic group of school librarians, education leaders, and tech innovators, as well as authors, publishers, and vendor stakeholders to discuss how to take on a greater leadership role in overcoming the current literacy crisis—from teaching about and defending quality information over Fake News to fostering digital literacy and learning in these ever changing technological times.

The 2017 Summit will surface current research about information literacy and showcase leaders who are accelerating their efforts to help shape a more proactive and impactful approach to this key work. Attendees will gain insight into the evolving and critical role of librarians in this ecosystem, models and tools to take back to their own schools, and vast informal learning from peer leaders from across the country.

This year, we are very excited to be bringing the Summit to Nashville, TN, the home of groundbreaking collaboration between school and public libraries, and a hub of school library leadership. New challenges call for new approaches, so we are excited to bring this national forum into this vibrant community space to look at how school and public libraries can work together to support literacy.

There will be plenty of time for reflection, collaboration, and networking with colleagues.

The Summit program officially starts on Saturday, October 7th. However, participants are encouraged to arrive on Friday to join us for exciting and informative pre-conference events, including a tour of Nashville area school libraries, sponsor focus groups, and a cocktail reception hosted on site by Capstone Publishers. Preliminary information on Friday’s pre-conference events is included on the schedule page but check back for updates.
