Event description

Description

Broadband has become an indispensable tool for economic prosperity in Nebraska. But there is sometimes a disconnect between broadband providers and those that want and need the service. Those who need it may think it's not available, when in fact it is. Those who provide it may not realize the extent of the broadband demand that exists. Join fellow Nebraskans on Thursday, October 26, 2017, at Nebraska Broadband TODAY! to learn about the availability of broadband services across the state, hear from providers, developers, state officials and entrepreneurs that use broadband extensively in their businesses, be exposed to the many job opportunities that the broadband industry has created and help inspire new and creative ways to leverage broadband technologies to foster community and economic growth.

AGENDA

7:30 am Registration Open

8:30 am Welcome/Opening Remarks
Tim Schramm, Nebraska Public Service Commissioner

8:50 am Keynote Speaker: Brad Barker, University of Nebraska, Assoc. Prof. Science & Technology

9:30 am Breakout Session I

  • Broadband 101 - Understanding telecommunications terms and policies can be a hurdle for many communities when working with providers. This session will give you a basic understanding of broadband technologies and telecommunications policy.
  • Do You Feel the Need for Speed? - Learn about what speed you need to accommodate multiple devices and common applications in homes, businesses and the medical field. Also, learn about future applications which will require greater speeds. Finally, learn what you can you do with a gig?
  • Student Equity of Access - Digital Inclusion, Homework Gap, and Equity of Access are all terms that refer to the problem of K-12 students who have insufficient Internet bandwidth at home to complete their assignments and access their school’s network resources. Attend this session to learn how big a challenge it is for Nebraska, what school administrators should do about it, and a number of technology interventions that can be deployed to narrow the “homework gap” and improve students’ equity of access.

11:15 am Broadband 102 Better Together: How Communities and Telecommunications Providers Can Work Together to Identify Solutions that Improve Services- Learn how telecommunications providers and community leaders can work together as strategic partners to help identify service needs, overcome barriers, and create effective technology solutions that will help communities reach their current and future goals.

12:15 pm Lunch - Like! A Facebook Data Center Comes to Nebraska - Learn about the partnerships and hard work behind the successful recruitment of the Facebook Data Center.

1:30 pm Broadband 103 - Reaching Rural and Low-Density Areas

3:15 pm Breakout Session II

  • Optimizing Your W-Fi - Learn some common wireless troublemakers that may slow your home network down, and review best practices to ensure your home is up to speed.
  • What Funding is Available? - Broadband deployment comes down to a business case and that means funding. Fortunately, there are many sources communities and providers can consider when developing that case.
  • Explore * Collaborate * Create * Learn * Invent - Library Innovation Studios Makerspaces - This session will share information about how makerspaces in local public libraries can facilitate youth and adults working together through hands-on participatory learning activities. The Nebraska Library Commission was recently awarded a National Leadership Grant by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) for Nebraska’s Library Innovation Studios: Transforming Rural Communities to enable local libraries to host rotating makerspaces. Join us to explore how the foundation of broadband infrastructure can combine with innovative learning tools, equipment, instruction, and training in libraries, and be paired with community engagement to accelerate local entrepreneurship, skill development, and economic development.

4:15 pm Keynote Speaker: Jeff Yost, President & CEO, Nebraska Community Foundation

This conference is convened by the Nebraska Telecommunications Association in collaboration with the Nebraska Broadband Initiative.
