Event Details

Children ages 3-6 and their adult caregivers are invited to join us for a 90 minute nature themed monthly program. Each month our “sprouts” will use their senses to connect to the natural world through nature stories, short hikes, songs and nature crafts.

January 26:   Over and Under the Snow

Join us as we discuss the activities we enjoy on a crisp winter day as well as learn about what the animals at Duke Farms are doing during the winter months.  While children may dream of snowmen, sledding, and skating, the animals are busy, too.  There is so much happening during the winter months if you know where to look.  We will read a book and take a walk to the Community Garden, weather permitting, to look for signs of animals along the way.  Back in the classroom we will do some snow science, art projects, and warm ourselves with a hot drink.  Think snow!

February 23:  Sugar Maple Time

The end of February and beginning of March is traditionally when the sugar maple sap starts to run.  What a sweet time!  After a story we will take a hike to the Sugar Shack at Dukes to see the process of making maple syrup, so dress appropriately.  We will return to do a maple syrup taste test and participate in a pancake race.

March 23:  The Duke Eagles

Has your family been watching Duke’s Eagle Cam?  If not, this is a perfect time to join us for cam viewing, watching new eaglets, stories, songs, and activities about our famous eagles.  There are people from all over the world who love to watch our bald eagles fix up their nest, lay eggs, and care for the new arrivals.  It is amazing to think that the babies arrive when the weather is raw and wintery.

April 27:  Dirt Made My Lunch

The children will learn about the importance of good soil for growing organic vegetables.  We will play with dirt, investigate what makes up the soil we have in our Community Garden education garden, find out different ways of composting, and create our own worm towers.  We will read a book about composting and creating a garden, as well as listening to the song “Dirt Made My Lunch.”

Please note that we cannot accommodate any children who are not registered for the program. This includes the younger siblings of any registered participant as well as any toddlers or babies in arms, carriers, slings or strollers.

ACCOMPANYING ADULTS ARE ALSO REQUIRED TO REGISTER.
