Event description

Description

Honoring Dr. King's lifelong dedication to service and justice, GO-MAP is partnering with United Way of King County and Seattle Tilth to build a food forest and restore the wetlands at the Rainier Beach Urban Farm & Wetlands (RBUFW).

The RBUFW is a community education center that supports a natural wetlands and organic food production. Community members of all ages volunteer and participate in our educational programs, learning to grow food organically and restore the natural wetlands habitat that runs down the middle of the farm, while supplying fresh food for the community.

Tasks may include: Preparing planting beds, planting, watering, weeding, harvesting, and composting. Wetland work includes removing invasive weeds, planting wetland trees and shrubs and sheet mulching to protect them.

What to bring: Dress for the weather and bring your own water bottle, snacks and lunch. Appropriate clothing includes layers, raingear, and sturdy shoes (hiking boots or rubber boots work well). Wear clothing that you don’t mind getting dirty. Note: Tools and gloves are provided.

In the spirit of Dr. King: Dr. King believed in a nation of freedom and justice for all, and encouraged all citizens to live up to the purpose and potential of America by applying the principles of nonviolence to make this country a better place to live — creating the Beloved Community. The MLK Day of Service is a way to transform Dr. King's vision of racial and economic justice into community action that helps solve social problems.
