What is MBSR?
MBSR is an experiential program based on the practice of mindfulness. Mindfulness is " the awareness that arises from paying attention in a particular way, on purpose, in the present moment, and nonjudgmentally." It enables individuals to step out of ‘automatic pilot’, and to connect and respond to daily life with increased awareness and self-control. Pioneered by Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D. at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in 1979, MBSR is an evidence-based program being offered at hospitals, work and learning environments nationwide.
Research shows that participants experience many benefits such as:
-enhanced memory and focus,
-ability to live in present time,
-creative problem solving,
-increased emotional control and healthier stress response.
Some findings from scientific research published by the Association for Mindfulness in Education (http://www.mindfuleducation.org/) are:
“increased attention, increased executive function…, decreased ADHD behaviors—specifically hyperactivity and impulsivity, fewer conduct and anger management problems, increased emotional regulation, increased self-calming, increased social skills and social compliance, increased care for others, decreased negative affect, or emotions, decreased anxiety in general … decreased depression, increased sense of calmness, relaxation, and self-acceptance, increased self-esteem, increased quality of sleep.”
The Department of Veterans Affairs has published the following findings on the effect of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) training program on veterans (http://www.ptsd.va.gov/professional/treatment/overview/mindful-PTSD.asp):
“This treatment has primarily been employed to help patients manage stress associated with a variety of physical health conditions, such as chronic pain [and] has also been shown to be a useful treatment approach for anxiety disorders and depression … conditions that commonly co-occur with PTSD … Mindfulness meditation, a part of this therapy, is intended to cultivate a de-centered and nonjudgmental perspective in relation to physical sensations as well as cognitions and emotions …”
Educators, Parents, Health Care professionals, Community leaders and others interested in cultivating and applying mindfulness in their sphere of activity are invited to take this class.
