Event description

Description

Can you imagine a church where the body is fed as well as the soul?

A church where women are truly equal to men?

A church where straight and gay people worship together as children of God?

A church where the mission budget is as large as the operating budget?

A church where children are cherished in practice and not just in theory?

A church where following Jesus is just as important as worshiping Christ?

A church where we earn our tax-exempt status by giving back to the community?

A church where trying to discern what Jesus taught us about God is more important that arguing over what the church has taught us about Jesus?

A church where learning is not subversive and science is not the enemy of faith?

A church where there is no acceptable alternative to hope, no substitute for joy, and no excuse not to offer the same unconditional love to others that has been so freely lavished on us?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, we invite you to attend the 2017 edition of the Lyons Lecture Series on Saturday, April 29th at FUMC. Hear our guest presenter, noted author, speaker, and preacher, Dr. Robin Meyers, address these and many other similar questions. Hurry, because seating is limited to the first three hundred registrants. Take advantage of our early bird discount, through February 28! Special reduced rates for young adults and students of all ages apply.

From a review by Bill Moyers (The Underground Church - cover):

"When was the last time you thought of going to church as dangerous? Once we challenged the status quo, now we mostly defend it. ...we must recover our subversive roots..."

Doors open at 9:00am. The first lecture begins at 10:00am, followed by a lunch break, and the second lecture.

This year, we are pleased to work with a new (to us) catering company, Working Class Catering at Goodman Community Center. Their program to employ at-risk teens, and to provide meals using entirely compostable packaging, lines up well with the social justice and environmentally responsible mission of FUMC.
