Description

The Liz Carpenter Lectureship, presented by the Plan II Honors Program

Liz Carpenter, who served in the White House as press secretary to Lady Bird Johnson, was a Distinguished Alumna of UT Austin. The Liz Carpenter Lectureship was established in 1984 by a group of her friends and is dedicated to bringing some of the world's most interesting and engaging people to the UT campus.

Over the years, the Carpenter Lectureship has done just that. Past speakers include President Bill Clinton, President Gerald Ford, Hillary Rodham Clinton, Jehan Sadat, Maya Angelou, Bill Moyers, Jane Goodall, and writers such as Betty Friedan, Nora Ephron, Shana Alexander, and Jean Auel and nationally known humorists such as Fannie Flagg and Carol Channing.

Recent Liz Carpenter Lectures have featured Pulitzer-Prize-winning journalist Nicholas Kristof, New York Times editor Gail Collins, and former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich. The 2016 featured speaker was writer and activist Gloria Steinem.

This year's speaker will be Dan Rather, President and CEO of News and Guts. With a famed and storied career that has spanned more than six decades, Dan Rather has earned his place as one of the world’s best-known journalists. He has interviewed every president since Eisenhower and, over that time, personally covered almost every important dateline in the United States and around the world.

Rather joined CBS News in 1962. He quickly rose through the ranks, and in 1981 he assumed the position of Anchor and Managing Editor of the CBS Evening News-a post he held for 24 years. His reporting across the network helped turn 60 Minutes into an institution, launched 48 Hours as an innovative news magazine program, and shaped countless specials and documentaries. Upon leaving CBS, Rather returned to the in-depth reporting he always loved, creating the Emmy Award winning Dan Rather Reports on HDNet.

Now, building upon that foundation, he is president and CEO of News and Guts, an independent production company he founded that specializes in high-quality non-fiction content across a range of traditional and digital distribution channels.

The Liz Carpenter Lectureship is free and open to the public, however seating is limited. Tickets are required. Each attendee must register individually for a ticket.

UPDATE: Tickets to the auditorium are now waitlisted; tickets to the nearby overflow room where there will be a live video feed of the lecture are still available.

FAQs

What are the public parking options for the event?

An extremely limited amount of free parking for the LBJ Auditorium is located in Lots 38 and 40 along Red River Street on a first-come, first-served basis. Most parking on the UT Campus is paid parking. There are paid parking meters along Dean Keeton Street and the closest paid parking garages are the San Jacinto and Manor Parking Garages. Handicapped parking spaces are available in lots 38 and 40, as well as in both parking garages. A parking map with driving directions can also be found here.

Do I have to bring my ticket to the event?

Yes, due to limited seating you must present a ticket (printed or electronic) to be admitted into the auditorium. Once all the auditorium seats have been claimed, tickets will become available for a nearby overflow room with a video feed of the lecture. A waitlist option for the auditorium will also become available.

Is there reserved seating?

No, once admitted into the auditorium, seating is first-come, first-served. Please arrive early to ensure time for parking and making your way into the auditorium to find seats. Doors will open at 6 p.m.
