Event description

Description

Don't miss your chance to participate in this one-of-a-kind, only-in-LA, bucket-list experience: Kayaking the Los Angeles River.

WHERE: These guided kayak tours are on the "Glendale Narrows" section of the river, which is a sporty 2.5-mile stretch within an official Recreation Zone. It's just east of and over the hill from Dodger Stadium. Nearby neighborhoods include: Frogtown/Elysian Valley, Cypress Park, Glassell Park, Silver Lake and Atwater Village. The start of these adventurous trips is at the end of Clearwater Street.

WHAT: This section has some Class-I rapids (light) and plenty of rocks to maneuver around. It's fun but not easy; you should have prior kayaking experience. These popular guided recreational-educational tours are based on the successful trips we've run since 2011. Experience this vibrant part of LA and paddle this famous natural resource in a way you've never seen it before.

HOW: You'll paddle this lush section in one of our kayaks and it will take roughly 2.5 hrs. Your ticket includes all the basic equipment (kayak, paddle, helmet & life preserver). You'll not only improve your paddling skills, but our knowledgeable guides will educate you about the watershed, wildlife, history and politics of our hometown river. You'll learn how to be safer around rivers and you'll get a fantastic workout. Expect to get wet.

! NOTE that these trips are tough and are not for everyone. This is not simply flatwater paddling, as on our Sepulveda Basin tours up in the San Fernando Valley. There are numerous obstacles amidst shallow water, often in 90+ degree heat. There are boats to lift and rapids that could flip your boat. DO NOT register for these trips if you're a first-time kayaker; your paddling skills should be Intermediate or Advanced. Also, do not do this trip if you have a medical condition that could be compromised, or if you're particularly sensitive to less-than-pristine water, or if you're over 210 lbs. (due to kayak stability and capacity limits — sorry.).

WHO: LA Rver Expeditions is the original boating outfit on the LA River and the only one leading tours in both Recreation Zones. We are the group that, in 2008, paddled the 51 miles of the river to help win environmental protections for it under the Clean Water Act. Since then, as a California nonprofit, we've put 5,000+ people on the river in kayaks. We're proud of having contributed to our community's enjoyment and learning.

WHY: For its river conservation efforts, LA River Expeditions is the recipient of the Green Paddle award (American Canoe Association), the River Warrior award (Resource Renewal Institute) and the River Hero award (River Network). We do all this because we are avid kayakers and all-around river enthusiasts. We love rivers. Our experienced guides have decades of collective experience running rivers. They've received professional training in safety and paddling skills. All guides maintain First Aid/CPR certification. You'll be in good hands.

We hope to see you out on the LA River soon!!

FAQs:
* How experienced do I have to be? This trip requires you to be AT LEAST AN INTERMEDIATE-LEVEL KAYAKER. These are sporty, physically challenging and strenuous trips. Periodically, you'll need to get in and out of the boat — plan to get wet.

* Is there a weight limit? Yes, no more than 210 lbs., please. The water is shallow and the kayaks have a weight capacity limits. Be sure that each person for whom you're buying a ticket meets this criteria, or you/they may be in for a rather unpleasant experience. It's a stability/safety issue, too, so please respect that.

* How about age limits? For this stretch, we recommend about 12 years up to about 70 (barring any extraordinary health or physical pre-conditions).

* Is it hot out there? Yes. It can be very hot during the summer in this area. If you have particular issues with heat, or tenuous medical issues, this just might not be for you.

* How's the water quality? The LA River, like most urban rivers, suffers from pollution. Incidental contact with the water (i.e., hand to mouth, ingesting it) is to be avoided; common sense should be used. Still, the river is deemed safe for this type of activity by authorities who do water monitoring. LA River Expeditions has not had any notable, reported health incidents due to river water. We have anti-bacterial sanitizers and fresh water to wash off with.

* What if my trip is canceled? The trips are sometimes canceled due to poor weather. If that happens, we will work with you to reschedule you for another tour as soon as possible. If that's absolutely not possible, we'll plan to refund your money within one week.

* What about parking in the local neighborhoods? Park up on Fletcher Drive if you need to park near the kayak launch site. Observe all parking signs and be respectful of the neighbors!

* OK, so how do I get tickets? If, after all our caveats, you're still up for this novel adventure, then we'd love to have you aboard! Use this site to select the date, then just purchase your tickets.
