Event Details

Celebrate World Food Day on October 16 at the Iowa Hunger Summit as we continue the conversation on hunger in our state.

THE IOWA HUNGER SUMMIT is held each year during the World Food Prize's week of events in October at the Des Moines Marriott Hotel Downtown. It kicks off the events, preceding the Norman E. Borlaug International Symposium, also known as the "Borlaug Dialogue."  The Iowa Hunger Summit gathers hundreds of leaders from across Iowa representing community organizations, business and industry, state and local government, social agencies, churches and religious communities, schools and universities, and other groups that lead or participate in projects to eradicate hunger.

This all day conference, which includes a special Hunger Luncheon, is free and open to the public. The program features speakers and special panel sessions with leaders and experts in confronting hunger, poverty and malnutrition, both at home and abroad. The Governor and bipartisan representatives from the Iowa Legislature are regular attendees at the Hunger Luncheon, which also features the presentation of Robert D. Ray Iowa SHARES Humanitarian Award. Featured speakers at past Hunger Summits include: Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow, the founder of Mary's Meals; Howard G. Buffet; and Roger Thurow, the author of "The First 1000 Days."

We invite you to participate in this unique Iowa event and learn more about efforts to end domestic and international hunger. The 2017 Iowa Hunger Summit will take place at the Des Moines Marriott Downtown Hotel on Monday, October 16, 2017.

OVERVIEW

THE WORLD FOOD PRIZE FOUNDATION established the Iowa Hunger Summit as a means to celebrate Iowa's great successes in fighting hunger and poverty and to unite in further action against both.

The Iowa Hunger Summit is a grassroots event, free and open to the public, which gathers Iowa citizens fighting hunger for a day of workshops, keynote speakers and a Hunger Luncheon, where guests sample meals used by organizations in hunger-fighting efforts at home and abroad.

First held in 2007, the Iowa Hunger Summit seeks to gather leaders from across Iowa representing community organizations, business and industry, state and local government, social agencies, churches and religious communities, schools and universities, and other groups that lead or participate in projects to confront hunger.

The specific goals of the Iowa Hunger Summit are to: celebrate the many outstanding efforts of Iowans toward ensuring adequate food for all; encourage Iowans to continue and expand these efforts; and increase statewide awareness of hunger, poverty, and related issues.
