Hilton Head Island History Day. Saturday, October 14th, 2017

Hilton Head Island History Day offers two unique ways to witness the island’s history. Docent-led Bike tours and docent-led trolley tours offer four guided morning and afternoon explorations of the island’s military history, its role in the Civil War, and its historical dedication to preserving its waterways and agriculture. End your day at Hudson's Seafood on the Docks between the hours of 5:00 and 7:00pm for a Lowcountry Boil and a performance by the legendary Mt. Calvary Inspirational Dancers.

  • Melly Mel's will be on-site at Coastal Discovery Museum from 11:30am to 2:00pm serving up delicious BBQ and more for an additional price

A) Morning Guided Bike Tour -$15

Focus: The Civil War

Tours leave from Mitchelville Beach Park starting at 9:00, 9:30, 10:00 and 10:30am. This tour winds through the area’s deep roots in military history, with stops at Fort Howell, Mitchelville Freedom Park, Fort Sherman, and Fort Walker. You’ll also get a rare chance to see Hilton Head Island’s astounding Headlands/Steam Gun before the tour makes its way back to Mitchelville Beach Park. Ages 12 and up, please.

  • NOTE: This is a vigorous ride for experienced riders, with an estimated tour time of around 3.5 hours

  • Helmets are Required; Bug Spray, Water and Sunscreen are Recommended.

  • Rides leave every 1/2 hour from Mitchelville Beach Park, 120 Mitchelville Road (please note: this is NOT the Mitchelville Freedom Park/aka Fish Haul Park). Please arrive 1/2 hour prior to departure.

  • Restroom stops are available.

B) Afternoon Guided Bike Tour - $15

Focus: Fishing and Farming

These guided bike tours offer a more relaxed ride and a focus on Hilton Head’s agricultural past, Native Islander roots and legacy of caring for our waterways. Guided bike tours start at Hudson’s Seafood on the Docks at 1:00, 1:30, 2:00 and 2:30pm. This 2.5-hour casual ride visits The Sailing and Rowing Center, where the Hilton Head Fishing Cooperative met to launch their trip to Washington D.C. to deliver petitions against proposed development of a chemical plant planned for the Colleton River area, then explores a Native Islander Cemetery (Amelia White) and Greens Shell Park, The Cotton Hope Tabby Ruins, the Gullah Museum and Fort Mitchel in Hilton Head Plantation before returning to Hudson’s Seafood. Ages 10 and up, please.

  • Helmets are Required; Bug Spray, Water and Sunscreen are Recommended.

  • Ride leaves every 1/2 hour from Hudson's Seafood On The Docks, 1 Hudson Road off Squire Pope Road (please note, this is NOT the site of Benny Hudson Seafood) Please arrive 1/2 hour prior to departure.

C) Morning Guided Trolley Tour - $25

Focus: Military History

This fascinating docent-led tour departs at 9:00 and 9:30am from Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn. Journey to the beaches of the Port Royal Sound to historic Fort Sherman, Fort Walker, and The Headlands/Steam Gun site. Continue on your guided trolley to the Zion Cemetery, as well as Leamington Lighthouse and Veterans Memorial Park. This tour highlights the tremendous impact the military has had on Hilton Head Island (and vice versa). Melly Mel's catering will be available on-site at Coastal Discovery Museum from 11:30am to 2:00pm serving up delicious BBQ and more for an additional price.

  • This is a "stay with your own trolley" tour and lasts over 3 & 1/2 hours.
  • Restroom stops are available.
  • This trolley tour leaves from Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn, 70 Honey Horn Drive.


D) Afternoon Guided Trolley Tour - $25

Focus: Forts & The Civil War

The afternoon docent-led tour, leaving at 1:00 and 1:30pm from Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn visits Fort Howell, Fort Sherman, Fort Walker, and The Headlands/Steam Gun site. In addition to these military sites, you’ll see tabby ruins of antebellum structures at Barker Field and visit the site of Mitchelville, the first freedman’s community in the United States. Melly Mel's catering will be available on-site at Coastal Discovery Museum from 11:30am to 2:00pm serving up delicious BBQ and more for an additional price.

  • This is a "stay with your own trolley" tour and lasts over 3 & 1/2 hours.

  • Restroom stops are available.

  • This trolley tour leaves from Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn, 70 Honey Horn Drive.


E) Historic Lowcountry Dinner at an Historic Lowcountry Place

Top off your History Day with a Lowcountry Boil and a performance by the legendary Mt. Calvary Inspirational Dancers at Hudson's Seafood House on the Docks, Hilton Head Island's Iconic seafood restaurant. 5-7pm. Tickets: $35 per adult and $15 per child. Cash bar.
