The theme for the 2017 conference of the Greater Western Travel and Tourism Association is ‘Finding the Balance: Visitor Management and Destination Sustainability’. The theme addresses the challenges often faced by destination researchers, marketers and public policy administrators as they seek to balance the preferences of visitors with the overall preservation needs of a destination. In this regard, finding the balance has its roots in visitor management and the concept of destination sustainability.
Topics include, but are not limited to, the role of visitor management in meeting visitor demand for a destination while simultaneously preserving the cultural, political, social, and economic environment of the destination through the administration of appropriate policies and practices.
To facilitate this objective, the conference will provide a forum where attendees from academia, destination marketing organizations, government agencies, and other travel industry professional can meet to discuss, present, and learn about cutting-edge research techniques and practices in this area. The conference will include presentations from both academic scholars and practicing professionals.
