Event description

Join us for the annual Great Lakes Chapter of the Society for Public Health Education Fall Conference!

This year's event is entitled "Improving Health Through Systems Thinking"

Keynote sessions will feature:

  • Beyond the Field: The Business Case for Advancing the Emotional Wellness of Difference Makers

    Shannon Cohen, MPA, CPS, BA

    Principal/Founder of Shannon Cohen, Inc.

Data proves there is a talent retention, employment engagement, organizational performance, and economic cost associated with burnout. Public health leaders are challenged to lead well in the midst of a changing political climate, expanding human need, and increasingly complex wicked problems. This interactive plenary session will help leaders identify and adopt individual and organizational self-care processes that prioritize the emotional well-being of difference makers within our teams and organizations.

  • How a Diverse System of Experts are Working Towards the Celebration of Opioid Reduction: A Panel Discussion

    Patrick Shannon, JD, EdD, MPH

    Chief Judge
    Saginaw Chippewa Tribe

    Steve Alsum
    Executive Director
    The Red Project

    Jill Montgomery Keast, MPA, CPC-R
    Health Education and Promotion Supervisor
    Public Health - Muskegon County

    Kristin Swann, MS, LAc
    Acupuncturist & Herbalist
    Grand Rapids Wellness, PC

There is an identified epidemic regarding the use of opioids, but what is the next step? What is our solution? This panel of experts will lead a discussion regarding effective non-traditional programming that has been providing positive outcomes for our communities. Learners will be able to identify person-centered solutions to the crisis at hand, network with "boots on the ground" leaders in the field, and determine their next step moving toward the celebration of opioid reduction.
