ASTRONOMY JAMBOREE PROGRAM

Every year the Custer Observatory, in Southold, NY, hosts a weekend of astronomy lectures, stargazing, and friendship. 2017 marks the 39th year of this fun and exciting weekend of lectures, demonstrations, friends, food, music, and of course stargazing! It is a weekend for families, those new to astronomy, as well as seasoned stargazers.

All Programs on Friday Evening, November 3rd to be held at Custer Observatory

6:00pm Door Registration Begins at the Custer Observatory and continues on Saturday.

7:30pm The evening includes Celestial Poetry Reading by our long time member Bob Farrell and a Wine & Cheese Social. Bring your favorite astronomical poems. (Elmer Room)

9:00pm Join us for the historical tradition of singing The Astronomer’s Drinking Song. .

9:30pm - 1:00am The evening will be topped off by observations through Custer’s New Zerochromat Telescope and the telescopes brought by participants! (weather permitting)

All Morning & Afternoon Programs on Saturday, November 4ᵗͪ to be held at Southold Town Recreation Center (located 1 mile west from Custer)

9:30am - 10:30am “Creatures of the Night” - Quogue Wildlife Center (Alpha Room)

9:30am - 10:30am “Radio Telescopes” - Justine Haupt (Beta Room)

10:00am Solar Observing - In the Parking Lot (weather permitting) - Bob Farrell

10:30am Planetarium Show - “Constellations” Wish Upon a Star Lab Andie Pisicano (Check Schedule at Gamma Classroom for show times)

11:00am - 12:00pm - “Past and Present Influence of Custer on Visitors” - A Custer Town Hall type meeting with young individuals who have attended Custer Institute. Future: Lucia Mallozzi Recent SCCC Graduate entering Stony Brook University, pursuing a Geology Degree with intentions of becomong a Planetary Scientist. Past: Michael Wall, Greg Gillen and Ian Andrews. (Auditorium)

12:00pm - 1:00pm Lunch Break - Party Hero and beverages will be available for purchase at the Southold Town Recreation Center Kitchen

1:00pm “Welcome to the 39th Astronomy Jamboree - Charles Cardona, Custer President (Rec room)

1:30pm “The Great American Total Solar Eclipse: A Look Back and a Peak Forward to April 8, 2014” - Joe Rao, Meteorologist at Verizon FIOS 1. Joe Rao has experienced 12 Total Solar Eclipses, 5 in air, with a total of 27 minutes. (Rec Center)

3:00pm Workshop: “Astrophotography” - John Speroni and Jake Stavola (Alpha room)

3:45pm Workshop: “Grinding a Telescope Mirror” - Cindy Cichanowicz (Beta room)

4:00pm - 5:00pm “Lecture” Papas Lecture (Auditorium) 5:00pm - 6:45pm Dinner Break for Members & Participants

8:00pm Keynote Speaker - Dr. Fred Walter (Southold Town Rec Center) “The Dark Side of the Sun” This year's Fred Hess Memorial lecture is presented by a long time supporter of Custer Institute. Dr. Frederick Walter is a professor of Astronomy at Stony Brook University. He is actively involved in observational work of the Sun and Magnetic Activity in Solar-like Stars. He also does research on Galactic Novae exploding White Dwarf stars in cataclysmic variable systems.

9:00pm -1:00am Observing and Refreshments at Custer Institute (weather permitting)

Sunday Morning, November 6ᵗͪ at Custer Observatory, Southold, NY

10:00am Astronomical Communal Breakfast Gathering (bagels, muffins,etc. in the Elmer Room) Join us for a Friendly exchange of you astronomical interests and a sharing of your August 21, 2017 Total Solar Eclipse Experiences! Bring your photos, momentos, t-shirts, and any momories of your experiences of the Great American Solar Eclipse. Also, it is not unresonable to make plans for the Custer Club membership group trip for the Second Great American Solar Eclipse on April 8, 2024!
