2017 Braumann Bell/Alpha Omega Lectureship Presentation

Tuesday, October 24, 2017

Course Summary:

Ken M. Hargreaves, DDS, PhD will discuss regenerative endodontics during the 2017 Bi-Annual Brauman- Bell Alpha Omega Lectureship at the College of Dentistry.  Considerable excitement exists for developing dental applications that employ post-natal stem cells and concepts of tissue engineering.  Although much remains to be done to advance this field, progress has been made in clinical regenerative endodontic procedures:  literally, saving teeth by regenerating a pulp-dentin complex.  This program will describe the current status of regenerative endodontic procedures, their potential and predictors of healing success.  Both clinical and basic studies will be reviewed to provide the practitioner with the latest information on this field with an emphasis on practical steps to apply these procedures in treating selected patients.

Course Presenter:

Dr. Hargreaves is Professor & Chair of the Department of Endodontics at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.  He is also a professor in the departments of Pharmacology, Physiology and Surgery at the University of Texas School of Medicine.  He is an internationally recognized expert in the mechanisms and management of pain disorders.  He serves as PI or co-PI on $30 million in NIH research grants and has received an NIH MERIT Award and the 2013 UTHSCSA Presidential Distinguished Senior Research Scholar Award.  Ken has published 150 papers, two textbooks and has five patents issued/pending.  Recently, his research team has discovered a novel class of natural agents that are released during tissue injuries such as burns, cancer or inflammation, and activate the “capsaicin-receptor”. Current studies are focused on developing novel analgesic drugs that block these “endo-capsaicins”.  Dr. Hargreaves is the USAA Foundation President’s Distinguished University Chair in Neurosciences.

The Brauman - Bell Alpha Omega Lectureship was established in 1992 when the Dallas alumni chapter of Alpha Omega International Fraternity presented a contribution from Alfred W. Brauman to Baylor College of Dentistry. The lectureship was named in honor of BCD alumni Dr. Welden E. Bell and Dr. Alfred W. Brauman. The lectureship was endowed in 1997 through two generous gifts to Baylor College of Dentistry from Dr. Brauman’s daughter, Tricia Michaelson of Dallas.
