Atlanta Urban Farms and Gardens Tour (Friday, November 10, 10am - 2pm: Tour only)
Learn about the dynamic food and land work happening in Atlanta, Georgia by touring our urban farms and gardens! Travel around an epicenter of Atlanta’s black agriculture, South West Atlanta, and hear the stories of growers and the spaces they cultivate, including the Truly Living Well Center for Natural Urban Ag, HABESHA Gardens, and the tropical oasis of Haylene Green. We’ll see the Fresh Market at MARTA, an innovative project that intersects food and transportation, and have lunch at the Sweet Auburn Curb Market (not included in ticket price). Round-trip transportation is provided.

Rural Tour in Tuskegee, Alabama (Friday, November 10, 10am: Tour only)
Join us for a tour steeped in Southern history, and learn about the legacy of agriculture rooted in Tuskegee, Alabama. This tour is hosted by the Carver Integrative Sustainability Center and the College of Agriculture, Environment, and Nutrition at Tuskegee University. NOTE: Travel time from Atlanta, GA to Tuskegee, AL is two hours each way, and round-trip transportation is provided

Join us day full of workshops, panel discussions, demonstrations, networking, kinship, and much more with presenters from around the country! “Rooted and Rising: Black Southern Legacies of Resistance and Resilience”, the 7th annual Black Farmers and Urban Gardeners Conference, will feature the conference keynotes of Virginia-based culinary historian, Leni Sorensen; Georgia centennial farmer and chef, Matthew Raiford; renown Georgia-bred farmer and organizer, Shirley Sherrod; and Mississippi-glazed activist/advocate, Rukia Lumumba. NOTE: Lunch will not be provided - conference attendees will are encouraged to visit the Sweet Auburn Curb Market, a historic indoor market and cafeteria, and the various restaurants in proximity to the conference venue. Black Urban Growers (BUGs) and our partners are pleased to present the 7th Annual Black Farmers & Urban Gardeners (BUGS) Conference, convening urban and rural farmers, students, chefs, food product makers, herbalists, nutritionists, consumers, policy makers, educators, activists and organizations from across the country! Rooted and Rising: Black Southern Land Legacies of Resistance & Resilience is the theme of this year’s conference.
 
Through engaging and participatory workshops, panel discussions and networking events, we will explore the Southern roots of Black Agriculture and its connections and influence on today’s movements for Black food sovereignty, urban agriculture, food systems, reclaiming Black cultural foodways and rebuilding thriving Black communities. The conference will also provide hands-on, skill-building workshops on sustainable agriculture education including soil health, hydroponics, hoop tunnels and other related topics. The 7th Annual BUGS Conference will be held at Georgia State University, 55 Gilmer Street, Student Center East, Atlanta, GA. The conference will run from November 10-12, 2017.
 
On Friday, November 10, the local host committee will provide urban farm tours in both Atlanta, Georgia and Tuskegee, Alabama. There will also be a fundraising reception to kick off the conference and offer attendees an opportunity to meet keynote speakers and network with cohorts from across the country. On Saturday, conference attendees will participate in keynote panel discussions; a comprehensive line-up of workshops and a vendor marketplace will be held featuring products and services contributing to the health, wellness, and prosperity of communities of color. The conference will close on Sunday, November 12th with break out sessions focused on local and national post-conference organizing efforts.

Since 2010 we’ve been creating a space for urban and rural farmers, food justice activists, chefs, educators, policy makers and everyday citizens to come together and share innovative ideas, projects, and best practices for reclaiming and reshaping our community food systems.
