GREAT Standards Logo

The HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology provides professional development opportunities for life science educators across the state. The latest in the continuing series of Genetic Resources to Empower Alabama Teachers (GREAT) workshops will be held February 15-16, 2017. This third round of GREAT Workshops will focus on the genetics and genomics content and the instructional shifts in the new, 2015 Alabama Course of Study: Biology standards*. Some questions that will be answered include:

  • How do students develop and use models to understand the structure and function of cell membranes?
  • How do genetic and environmental factors interplay in risk for common complex disease like diabetes and heart disease?
  • Can we engage students in data analysis to make real world decisions?
  • How are genomic variants analyzed in a clinical laboratory setting? Can I model that in my classroom?
  • How will my current lesson plans meet the new course of study? What modifications can I make to increase course of study relevance?
  • What tools are available to help me implement the new course of study?

*This content is limited to high school, life science teachers, with a focus on General Biology, and is not designed for middle school teachers.

The GREAT Workshop will be held at the McWane Science Center
February 15-16, 2017
from 8:00 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. each day.

This two-day workshop incorporates small and large group sessions to update educators on recent genetics and biotechnology applications that are too new for textbooks and provide resources for incorporating cutting edge science into the classroom.

For Alabama public high school teachers, schools will be reimbursed for substitute costs of up to $70/day. Teachers who complete both days of the workshop will return to the classroom with lesson plans and hands-on materials that support the state course of study standards for Biology.

For educators whose schools are more than 60 miles from the event location, a limited number of travel reimbursements are available and will be awarded based on an application basis. You can apply for travel here.

Please register by January 27, 2017. When you register, please keep in mind that you are registering for both days of the GREAT Workshop in its entirety.

The GREAT Workshop is made possible through support from the State of Alabama.

The HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology is a not-for-profit research institute in Huntsville, AL with a strong emphasis on genetics education for students, educators and the public.
