Description

The 2017 Georgian Court University Men's and Women's Tip-Off Dinner will be one for the ages as the Lions welcome Hall-of-Famer, Bob Hurley, Sr., as their keynote speaker. This always-memorable preseason tradition is a "must" for any basketball fan, the evening will serve as an opportunity to meet and greet GCU head coaches (and former NCAA greats) Terrence Stewart and Jasmina "Jazz" Perazic, as well as their coaching staffs and rosters, as the Lions prepare to kick off an exciting season of hoops!

Coach Hurley was a basketball legend at the recently-closed St. Anthony High School in Jersey City, New Jersey where he amassed 28 state championships and more than 1,000 victories in 39 years as the head coach. On August 13, 2010, he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, only the third high school coach in history to be so honored.

St. Anthony won 30 state championships, more than any other school in U.S. history. Hurley was the coach for 28 of those teams and an assistant coach on the other two. His teams are known for their speed, defensive intensity, and precise ball movement. Every senior to graduate from his program has won at least one state championship, with many winning several. This is considered one of the greatest career-long feats of the 20th century.

The three-time USA Today National Coach of the Year and 2017 ESPY Best Coach is the father of Bobby Hurley, a former All-American point guard at Duke and the head basketball coach at Arizona State, and Dan Hurley, who is the head coach at the University of Rhode Island.

“I had a pleasure to hear Coach Hurley speak to our men’s and women’s basketball teams while I was an assistant at Monmouth University," stated Coach Perazic. "I have never heard a more direct, down to earth speech, a speech truly grounded in reality. Yet, this speech was so inspirational and so motivational that I was certain that it would not and could not ever be duplicated. Well, it could not be duplicated by anyone, except of course by Coach Hurley himself here at Georgian Court University on November 4!"
