Event Details

Climb aboard the narrow gauge railroad for a frightfully fun ride through the dark forests of Ardenwood Historic Farm.  The entire family will enjoy the ghoulishly fun roundtrip ride on the haunted rails of the Ghost Train.

Tailored for families with children 12 years of age and under.

All children must be with an adult, but for safety reasons each child under 3 must be accompanied by a separate adult.

  • Where is the ticket office and when is it open?
The ticket office is located at the Ardenwood train station at the parking lot entrance to Ardenwood Historic Farm Preserve, 34600 Ardenwood Blvd, Fremont, CA. It opens at (or close to) 4:30 PM and closes by 9:30 PM on Haunted Train operating nights  (Friday-Saturday nights 10/21-10/23 and 10/28-10/30).  We accept cash, checks, and all major credit cards at the gate. Tickets are sold on a first come first serve basis. Tickets can be purchased the gate for any night the train operates.

PLEASE NOTE! The EBRPD staff operating the ticket office during the day between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM can not sell tickets for the Haunted train.

  • How many tickets can I buy in advance?
There is no overall limit. However, only 50 of the tickets (25 adult/25 Child) for any particular train are available for purchase online. The remaining  tickets will only be available at the ticket office on a first-come first-serve basis.

  • How 'Scary' is it?
Depends on the age of the rider. The intention is to provide a spooky and entertaining experience suitable for children under 10 and for adults as well.  The train traverses a dark forest with a number of  illuminated character scenes that are separated by Halloween themed blowups. The 'conductor' provides a tongue-in-cheek narration linking the trip with historical events.  There is no explicit gore or violence. You can get an idea by looking at our Halloween Train images at the  SPCRR Halloween Trains  gallery.

We do sell colored glowsticks as  'ghost protectors' at the station.
  • How should we dress?
The train operates outside on open cars. Costumes are great-- as long as you can sit in them. Dress for the weather--it can be cold and windy and occasionally sprinkles.  Please do not bring bright red lights as these can interfere with safe train operations.

  • What happens if I'm late for my train?
We strongly recommend you show up 30 minutes before your train is scheduled. Seats on any particular train are first-come first-seated and the line can get long. Seats for purchased tickets will be held until 10 minutes prior to the train departing. If the ticket holder does not show up by that time, their seats may be offered to ticket holders waiting in line for the next train. If this occurs, and you show up late we will try to get you on the next available train or issue a refund.

  • What if it is raining?
The trains will run as long as it is safe to operate. We will not operate if there is active rain or strong winds, but will operate if there is a light drizzle or fog. Typically weather is dry and cool.
Refunds will be given if the trains do not operate.

  • I bought tickets, but now I can't make it, how do I get a refund?
That depends on how your tickets were purchased, tickets purchased online can have refunds requested through Eventbrite, information is on the voucher. Tickets purchased at the ticket office can be refunded by the ticket office.  If there is an issue,  talk to the folks at the ticket counter or send an email to and we will see what can be worked out.

  • Can I video of take pictures of the event?
Yes with some restrictions. Video and photography are allowed before, during, and after the ride so long as they do not interfere with the safety and ambiance of the ride.  This is a dark ride, flood lights and camera flashes detract from the experience -- so be aware.

Flash photography of the operating crew (engineer, brakeman, and conductor) is not allowed because they need their night vision for safe operations.

  • You guys sound like a fun group! How can I get involved?
We ARE a fun group. The first place to go is the JOIN THE SPCRR menu entry on the SPCRR website and submit an interest form (or even join). We are always looking for folks interested in railroad history, restoring old railroad cars, working on the railroad, interpreting history, or helping us behind the scenes!

  • How do I contact you?
The best way is to email questions to or you can call our information line and leave a message at  (866) 417-7277 ( !!  Please note: the information line voice mail box is checked daily- but it is much faster to get a response using  email)
