2016 Skyline College Adjunct Faculty Teaching & Learning Symposium

By Skyline College CTTL

When and where

Location

Skyline College 3300 College Drive San Bruno, CA 94066

Description

A major component of The Skyline College Promise includes the promise that students’ academic experience/success will be “supported by a foundation of quality instruction” (The Skyline Promise, p. 7). Given that “robust support for faculty to deepen their excellence in teaching and learning is an essential component of student success” (The Skyline Promise, p. 7), it is critical for Skyline College to provide professional learning opportunities for its faculty, especially adjunct professors, whose professional lives often pose barriers to accessing quality professional development opportunities geared towards enhancing teaching strategies/practices particularly geared towards enhancing student success in the first and second semesters of college.

The Skyline College Adjunct Professional Development Day will support The Skyline College Promise by providing adjunct faculty workshops and faculty engagement that will help them to deliver “meaningful and culturally relevant learning experiences” (The Skyline Promise, p. 7). Most of the proposed workshops are especially intended to address areas that could enhance student success in the first and second semesters.

Participants of Skyline College Adjunct Professional Day will:
• Explore and engage in specific teaching strategies that promote active learning
• Engage in community building and idea exchanges that foster growth in successful teaching
• Explore and identify campus resources that support student success
• Learn how to build student centered lessons, activities, and assessments
• Explore and identify ways the CTTL can support teaching
• Learn strategies for dealing with a campus crisis
