Choreographer: Robert Battle
Battle uses his taut, ritualistic style to powerful effect in a dance that expertly balances chaos and resolution, dissonance and harmony. His first new work since becoming artistic director in 2011 is set to a symphonic score by frequent collaborator John Mackey.
Choreographer: Alvin Ailey
Alvin Ailey’s Memoria is a deeply personal work and one of his most affecting. Mr. Ailey said that nearly all of his dances had some basis in a relationship, feeling or event that he experienced. In the case of Memoria, choreographed in 1979, his motivation was the death of his dear friend and colleague, Joyce Trisler.
When & Where
Steffi Nossen Dance Foundation
Established by dance legend Steffi Nossen in 1937, the Steffi Nossen School of Dance is Westchester’s premiere dance education destination. Rated Westchester Magazine’s 2013 “Best Unique Dance Class,” the faculty transmit the joy and discipline of dance with warmth and enthusiasm to dancers of all ages and abilities. Located in White Plains and Chappaqua, NY, our dance program provides an educationally sound, sequential curriculum and performance opportunities that foster technical and artistic development. We believe that dance is a unique form of education—developing the body, mind, spirit and character. With roots in modern dance, the school offers a full range of dance techniques including jazz, ballet, tap and hip hop. All classes are designed to challenge students to strive for personal excellence in a supportive, non-competitive environment.
