Description

Show your holiday spirit and creativity by designing a Gingerbread House for the community to see!

All entries will be on display at a FREE open house at the Rocklin Event Center on Friday, December 16, from 6:30-8:00 p.m. Houses will be voted on by the public and prizes will be awarded that evening around 7:30pm.

Register now until the EXTENDED deadline on Friday, December 9th! A participation gift is included with every registration. Entry fee is $10.00 and is nonrefundable. It is important to read through the entire rules & guidlines for the event.

There are 5 categories:

  • Snowflake (Families ages 16 and older)

  • Candy Cane (Families ages 15 and under)

  • Elves (Kids 9 and under, with no help from adults)

  • Santa’s Workshop (Business/Non-Profit)

  • Rudolph (Expert)

RULES AND PROCEDURES
The following rules and procedures have been set forth and established by The City of Rocklin Recreation, Arts and Event Tourism Department (henceforth referred to as RAET) for the purpose of the 2016 City of Rocklin Gingerbread House Contest. Please read the rules and procedures carefully and retain these sheets for your records. Due to space, only a limited number of entries will be accepted into the competition. You are encouraged to submit your entry form early and before the deadline to ensure entry into the competition. The RAET Special Events Department reserves the right to refuse any entry deemed inappropriate. For additional questions, please contact the RAET Department at 916-625-5200.
INDIVIDUAL ENTERING & QUALIFYING GUIDELINES
To be eligible for the competition, a completed online registration form and $10.00 non-refundable entry fee must be submitted prior to 11:59pm on Friday, December 9, 2016. Entries that are not pre-registered will not be accepted. Competitors will receive a confirmation email after registering. Each participant may only submit one entry.
TEAM ENTERING & QUALIFYING GUIDELINES
To be eligible for the competition, a completed online registration form and $10.00 non-refundable entry fee must be submitted prior to 11:59pm on Friday, December 9, 2016. One entry per team including a team captain’s contact information. Team captain’s will receive a confirmation email after registering. In the case of school groups entering the competition, the classroom teacher should be listed as the team captain and provide his/her contact information. In the event a team entry wins a prize, the team captain will be the recipient of any prizes. Distribution of ribbon or splitting of any prize will be left to the team captain to determine. We are not able to supply ribbons for each participant. If individuals working on a team entry are of different ages that would place them in different categories independently, the team must enter in the appropriate category for the oldest individual in the group. Entries that are not pre-registered will not be accepted.
CANCELLATION POLICY
RAET understands that situations may cause competitors to withdraw from the competition. In the event you are no longer able to compete, please inform The RAET Department by phone 916-625-5200, or Destra.amado@rocklin.ca.us. Unfortunately, no refunds will be issued to entries withdrawn from the competition.
ENTRY CATEGORIES
The following categories are open for entry into the 2016 City of Rocklin Gingerbread House Contest. Please remember the true reason for this event is to have fun and be creative.
  • Snowflake – Families ages 16 and older.
  • Candy Cane – Families ages 15 and under.
  • Elves – Children 9 and under (no adult assistance permitted)
  • Santa’s Workshop – Businesses or Non-profit Groups
  • Rudolph – Best in Show (intended for a more expert skilled level of construction and design)
RAET reserves the right to place an entry in a different category that would better suit the contest and entrant.
DESIGN
Although RAET’s holiday competition is titled “The City of Rocklin Gingerbread House Contest”; entries are not limited to the structure of a house. Competitors are welcome and encouraged to uniquely design their entry for the 2016 competition, as long as the entry is in keeping with the competition rules and procedures and the five judging criteria.
JUDGING AND CRITERIA
Judging will be held on Friday, December 16, 2016 with an Awards Ceremony held at approximately 7:30pm. Entries will be judged and voted on by the attendees at the event from 6:30-7:15pm. Theme should be competitor’s own and consistent throughout the entry. There is no required theme for the competition. Rudolph category only: Decorative elements that are handmade will carry more weight than similar prefabricated items. All rulings by the judges are independent and final. They are in no way influenced by RAET staff or affiliates.
SIZE LIMITATIONS
Entry must be placed on a board base. Entries combined with a base must not be larger than 24 inches high, 18 inches wide, and 18 inches long. We suggest using ½” or ¾” plywood as a base for your entry.
MATERIALS & CONSTRUCTION
The main structure of your entry must be constructed of at least 75% gingerbread, some of which should be exposed. Materials are not limited to just candies and icings. Use of gum paste, fondant, chocolate, modeling chocolate, royal icing, cast sugar, gelatin, and pressed sugar is encouraged. Non-Edible components are strongly discouraged but will not result in disqualification. No artificial display materials, such as Styrofoam, plastic or cardboard, are to be used in the construction or decoration of the entry. Electrical components are allowed as part of your entry but, you must bring/provide your own extension cord. Non-edible materials such as paint and/or ribbon are approved (and encouraged) only to decorate the outer edge of your base only (not to exceed the length and/or width of the base). All entries must be solely constructed by the individual entering the competition, with limited to no adult assistance. Teen, Youth and Child competitors may be supervised, for safety precautions, by a parent, legal guardian, or classroom teacher. Acceptable Supervision Example: When Teen, Youth, or Child competitors require assistance with operating the oven and/or stovetop. Please remember the true reason for this event is to have fun and be creative.
ENTRY REGISTRATION
Registration form and $10.00 non-refundable entry fee must be submitted prior to 11:59pm on Friday, December 2, 2016. Entries that are not pre-registered will not be accepted. Competitors will receive a confirmation email after registering. Each participant may only submit one entry.
DROP OFF DISPLAY PROCESS
  1. Entries must be checked-in at the Rocklin Event Center, 2650 Sunset Blvd., Rocklin, CA 95677 on Friday, December 16 between 4:30-6:00pm.
  2. Please UNLOAD your entry at the front entrance to the Rocklin Event Center. Vehicles will be allowed a maximum of 10 minutes in the loading zone in front of the building. You must promptly move your vehicle to an approved parking area once you have unloaded your entry.
  3. CHECK-IN is located in the front lobby of the Rocklin Event Center, 2650 Sunset. Blvd., Rocklin, CA 95677.
  4. At check-in you will be given an ENTRY NUMBER to place near your display.
  5. ENTRY PLACEMENT in the Ballroom is predetermined by RAET Staff.
PRIZES
Prizes & Ribbons will be awarded to the top winners of each of the 5 categories. Competitors will not be compensated for their participation.
  • Snowflake Category: 1st Place - $25 gift card & ribbon.
  • Candy Cane Category: 1st Place - $25 gift card & ribbon.
  • Elves Category:1st Place - $25 gift card & ribbon.
  • Santa’s Workshop Category:1st Place - $25 gift card & ribbon.
  • Rudolph Category: 1st Place - $50 gift card & ribbon, 2nd Place - $25 gift card & ribbon, 3rd Place - $25 gift card & ribbon.
2016 GINGERBREAD DISPLAY
Entries will be on display Friday, December 16, 2016 at the Rocklin Event Center, 2650 Sunset Blvd. from 6:30-8:00pm. We would love to display them the following day at Breakfast with Santa as part of the décor.
ENTRY PICK-UP
Competitors that would like to keep their gingerbread entry after Breakfast with Santa has ended must pick up their entry between 11:30am-Noon on Saturday, December 17, 2016. Entries not picked up will be discarded at 12:30pm.
