This hike is scheduled as a day event, actual time to complete will be dependent on group progress. It is important that each attendee assess their own capabilities to complete by reviewing all available resources and data for this event
This hike will take us along the Appalachian Trail from the Rt70/Rt40 Parking area for the Appalachian Trail to Gathland State Park. The hike will end at the Gathland State Park Townsend Monument parking lot.
This trek will feature a number of features along the way, including:
- Bartman Hill Train Intersection
- Washington Monument
- South Mountain Inn
- Reno Monument
- Lambs Knoll Fire Tower
- Townsend Monument
Do to the nature and length of the hike, attendees will have the option to pull off the trail at the South Mountain Inn or Reno Monument Parking and not complete the full distance; this should be planned for in your personal transportation and must be coordinated in advance with the trek leader.
This hike is considered moderate based on length and elevation changes. This also represents new territory for us, so no personal knowledge of this trail section is available.
For those working toward completing sections of the AT and pushing further out from Charles Town, this is a great opportunity to connect hikes we have done previously. If you participated in the Gathland to Harpers Ferry hike this summer, you will be half way across MD after this one.
- Clothes for the weather
- Sturdy hiking shoes
- Day Pack properly prepared:
- Scout 10 essentials
- Water, Water, Water – we will have an option to acquire fresh water refills at the Blackburn Trail Center, but it is a ½ to ¾ mile detour to do so.
- Trail snacks – this hike could be a strong 7 hours if you go the distance
Supervision: Any Scout attending this hike is required to have a parent/guardian on the trek – no solo scouts on this one
