Patricia Polacco is a world-famous author and illustrator of children’s books. She spent her childhood between a family farm in Union City, Michigan and Oakland, California. Polacco describes her time on the farm as the most magical time of her life. It was on her family farm that she heard such wonderful stories from her grandmother (her babushka) and where a real meteor fell in her front yard! Her writing is inspired by her rich Russian, Ukrainian, and Irish cultural heritage. As a child, Polacco struggled to learn to read and learned that she was dyslexic at the age of 14. In her stories, she shares with readers her childhood, her struggles and triumphs in school, and her diverse cultural background.
Polacco resides back on her family farm in Michigan but has studied in the U.S., England, France, Russia and Australia and has dedicated her life to being an advocate for children. Polacco has earned a Bachelors, Masters, and Ph.D. in Art and Art History. To date, she has written and illustrated over 115 books for children.
