Join Alexandria's Historic Breweries author, Garrett Peck, and Portner Brewhouse Co-Founder, Cat Portner, on a guided walking tour around Old Town Alexandria exploring the foundations of local brewing. The tour includes highlights from the print brouchure, a Portner Brewhouse sponsored beer sampling and culminates at one of Alexandria's current Hop Stops.
Each tour will feature local homebrewers that are interested in your feedback and a precursor to Portner Brewhouse's Craft Beer Test Kitchen. The homebrewers will be updated below as confirmed.
Dec 4: Featured Homebrewer: Joe Federico
(Bootstrap) Barley Legal Barleywine: 11% ABV
Barleywine-style ales are high gravity beers that require an extended aging period (usually 6-12 months) in order to allow the flavors and aromas to fully develop and blend with one another. This ale, brewed in back in late June, was awoken from its ‘slumber’ a bit earlier than originally planned, (hence the name “Barley Legal”) to be featured at this month’s event. This obscenely rich and viscous American-style Barleywine pushes the envelope in terms of ABV, bitterness, and caloric content. A deep mahogany strong ale that pours with a tan head and a big whiff of sweet malt and pungent hops ... so many hops, in fact, that you could mistake this beer for an overgrown IPA when it’s young.
Variations on a Theme - The Pumpkin Ale Experiments: 8.666% ABV
This Maple Pumpkin ale gets its deep amber color and flavor from 10 lbs. of handpicked pumpkins that are roasted for several hours before being added straight out of the oven into the boil. Dark robust maple syrup from a colleague’s family farm in Vermont is added near the end, along with a hint of traditional pumpkin pie spices to balance the flavor profile out. First poured at the Portner Brewhouse Octo-Board event in September of 2014, this particular batch was split in half and conditioned in two unique ways to produce distinctly unique flavor profiles:
· Variation 1: Maple Pumpkin ale aged for two months in an American oak barrel previously ‘seasoned’ for nearly a year with a Cabernet Franc from a local VA winery;
· Variation 2: Maple Pumpkin ale blended with a smoked chili beer – The result is a moderately sweet “chipotle-pumpkin” flavored ale with a touch of heat in the finish.
