Our annual San Juan River trip is coming up October 15th through 19th. We will take signups online and payments at the monthly meetings. Signup will be closed either at the September monthly meeting or when trip is sold out. The last day for signups and payments is September 1st, so we can make final arrangements for the trip. If you have not signed up and paid by September 1st, you will miss a fantastic trip.
We will stay at Abe’s Motel & Fly Shop. The cost is $250 (double occupancy) and includes a wonderful breakfast buffet on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday mornings and a very nice prime rib dinner at our Liar’s Banquet on Tuesday night.
If you are camping or making other lodging accomodations, the cost is $80, which includes the breakfasts and banquet. You will need to make your own arrangements with your camper or other room accomodation.
Additional cost are, to buy a separate $5 per day parking permit because the river is located in a state park. Permits can be purchased at any of the major parking areas. It is usually a good idea to purchase 5 permits for $25 dollars on the first day so you don’t have to worry about purchasing a permit each day.
IMPORTANT NOTE!! In addition a New Mexico Fishing License is required. One change this year is the New Mexico Fishing license is NOT included in the price. This is to accomodate those that have purchased or want to purchase an annual license. Cost for a 5 day license is $24 plus 2 stamps and processing. Total cost $34. An Annual license is $56 plus stamps, totaling $66. Once you have signed up for trip a link will take you to the New Mexico License System to purchase the license online. This is a good option so you can save the license in PDF format for reprint. Especially useful if you opt for the annual license.
Remember to debarb your hooks! The rangers sometimes randomly check anglers.
There are several local guides in the area for those of you who are interested in using a guide. They will pick you up in the morning at Abe’s. Please call a guiding service now if you want to book a guided trip, as reservations fill up fast for fall fishing trips. Here is a partial list of guides:
Abe’s (505) 632-2194
Aztec Anglers (877) 298-3204
Float ’N Fish (888) 475-5770
Fisheads of the San Juan (505) 634-0463
Our club has many members who have fished the river. Utilize your fellow members and their advice if you need help on the water. The river can be quite technical, as the fish see thousands of flies.
A typical AFC day goes something like this:
At 06:30 hours, we start with the breakfast buffet, share some company, plan our day, and then make our way to the various access points on the river.
Lunch is on your own. Bring your lunch to the river or go back to Abe’s. If you are like me and some of the other members, you will bring a lunch and stay out all day.
At the end of the day, most of the members like to fish around the area of the river known as Texas Hole. At dark, we go back to the rooms. Some members cook or barbeque outside their rooms, others head to the restaurants. We share stories about the day and get ready for the next day on the water.
It is also recommended that you attend the pre-trip meeting at the Sunnyslope Community Center on October 11th at 7:00 PM. We will discuss several topics, including preparation and techniques to use on the river. Even if you cannot make the outing, this is a good meeting to attend to obtain information on the river and fishing moving water.
This will be a fantastic fall fishing trip. Don’t miss this opportunity to fish a high quality water. If you have any questions, please contact trip host Phil Koda (outings@azflycasters).
