You are invited to attend the third annual Whole Hog Pig Roast to benefit the Institute Library!

Just announced! Portuguese American food writer and cookbook author David Leite will join us as a special guest! His book, The New Portuguese Table Cookbook, will be available for purchase and signing.

Library member, Amateur Hour co-creator, This American Life regular, and barbeque zealot Jack Hitt will roast an exquisite acorn-fed heritage hog from Walden Hill Farm for the Library's third farm-to-table fundraising event. His co-roaster, Jason Sobocinski of Caseus, also prepares vegetarian side dishes including braised collards with smoked onions and his legendary Seven Cheese Baked Macaroni. 

Jack, a native of Charleston, South Carolina, has spent a lifetime studying the history and prehistory of slow-cooked meat—the food that made hominids human—and learning the secrets of a perfect Carolina-style barbeque (those who "barbecue" are also welcome).

For the first time this year, he combines his expertise with a true delicacyacorn-finished pork, a centuries-old European tradition that prioritizes animal and environmental welfare by utilizing an abundant, nutrient-rich natural resource. 

Our party this year is hosted at the home of Debby Applegate, Pulitizer Prize-winning historian, and Bruce Tulgan, management guru and author, on Sunday, September 27. We'll have a feast to welcome autumn and kick off a new year of Library programs.

Also featuring:

Traditional Southern desserts by expert bakers! 

Local craft beer by Black Hog Brewing Co. available at the cash bar
(one free beer with standard ticket)!

And a tale of 200,000 years of food and fire from your host, Jack Hitt. 

Social 3:00 p.m. Dinner 4:00 p.m.

Rain or shine. (As attendees to the 2014 Roast will confirm, we know how to put up a tent!)

Anyone wishing to make an extra gift to the Institute Library and buy a $125 ticket will receive a tee-shirt or special surprise item created by Design Monsters (What will it be? An apron, tote bag, tea towel, potholder, or hat?).

Online ticket sales end at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, September 27, 2015. You may also purchase tickets (and save on fees) at the Library in person or by mailing payment to 847 Chapel Street, New Haven, CT 06510 (please provide an e-mail address). We encourage you to buy in advance—both of our past Roasts sold out.
