Social Hour to Follow
School on Wheels’ community outreach and advocacy group, SPOKES, is presenting a free education panel event, Be the Solution to Childhood Trauma: Increase Knowledge, Empower Learning, Deepen Impact. This event, in partnership with Butler University and Clowes Memorial Hall, will inform the community of the impact traumatic experiences and stress can have on a child’s brain, behavior and ability to learn.
Each panelist will address real life examples from their own area of expertise and provide the audience with proven effective approaches. School on Wheels Founder and CEO, Sally Bindley, will moderate. A social hour with light refreshments will follow.
Panelists include:
- Lori Desautels, Ph.D., is an assistant professor at both the undergraduate and graduate levels at Marian University in Indianapolis and has spent numerous years inside and outside of the classroom working with emotionally disabled students in a variety of school and health care settings.
- Andrew Plummer is a Quality Inspector for the Chrysler Corporation. Andrew has been a School on Wheels tutor for three years at the Salvation Army Ruth Lilly Women’s and Children’s Center. He has a natural ability to inspire any student he meets, encourages students to think beyond the present day and motivate his students to reach high expectations.
- Sheila Dollaske is a 2015 Mind Trust Innovation School Fellow and former IPS Principal of the Key Learning Community. Sheila transformed the once low performing Key Learning Community with innovative teaching approaches that have resulted in state letter grade increases of both middle and high schools.
- John M. Kunzer, MD, MMM, FAAP is the President & CEO, Eskenazi Medical Group and Chief Medical Officer, Eskenazi Health Center. John is responsible for 100 physicians and advanced practice providers and medical care delivered in the Eskenazi Health Centers. He is also a practicing Pediatrician at Blackburn Health Center.
- Charie L. Gibson is the McKinney-Vento Liaison for Indianapolis Public Schools. Charie began her career helping the homeless during the eighteen years she was employed at the Gary Public Library in her hometown of Gary, Indiana. Charie has experienced homelessness over the years with her own children and uses her personal experiences as encouraging and motivating examples to the families that she serves.
