Description
The annual Uhuru Solidarity Movement Convention's theme this year is "Reparations Now! Solidarity with African Liberation!"
This year, the convention will discuss how white people sit on the pedestal of colonial oppression of African and oppressed people, and that reparations is the genuine anti-colonial revolutionary stand that white people must take. Featuring Chairman Omali Yeshitela, the founder of the African People's Socialist Party and the Uhuru Movement, participants will learn how his theory of African Internationalism explains the current economic crisis and what must be done in order to achieve a world that is just and fair for everyone. Penny Hess, author of Overturning the Culture of Violence and Chairwoman of the African People's Solidarity Committee will also be a featured speaker.
The convention will emphasize the difference between genuine solidarity and white opportunism, exposing the weaknesses in and limitations of the anti-racism movement, charity organizations and other forms of white opportunism.
In addition, the convention will expose the depths of “racial divide": the wealth gap, police brutality, and other conditions that are a daily social reality for African people in the United States and around the world today. These conditions are rooted in the economic system of colonialism, and the solution is African self-determination: African workers having black power over their own resources and lives.
Workshops will be held to strengthen organizer skills in outreach, fundraising, building USM branches and other topics. The USM Convention will also kick off the annual "Days in Solidarity with African People" campaign which culminates in events throughout the month of October.
