Event Details

Maine Maritime Museum’s STEM on Merrymeeting Bay Teacher Workshop will give local teachers the tools they need to implement place-based, project-based learning in the classroom, using the unique, dynamic qualities of Merrymeeting Bay as their place-based context.

In this comprehensive five-session workshop, local experts will discuss the importance of Merrymeeting Bay from an enviornmental,geological and economic standpoint, then we'll explore the most effective techniques for teaching STEM programming centered on the Bay. Teachers who complete all five sessions will gain access to grant funding to make these plans a reality for their students in addition to certificates for contact hours.

Session One – Saturday, October 18 9am - 2pm
  • Overview and techniques of Project-Based learning.Led by facilitator John D’Anieri, we’ll look at the best ways to implement Project Based Learning.
  •  Building background knowledge of Merrymeeting Bay.
  • An overview of the history, environment and current issues concerning Merrymeeting Bay, presented by local experts from the Kennebec Estuary Land Trust, Friends of Merrymeeting Bay, Cathance River Educational Alliance and others.

 Session two- Thursday, October 30  4:30pm - 7pm

  • Designing Place-based "Building Background Knowledge"

Session Three- Thursday, November 13 4:30-7pm

  • Developing Place-based research questions from the background knowledge

Session Four- Tuesday, November 25 4:30pm-7pm

  • Designing "Culminating Events" With authentic audiences

Session Five- Saturday, December 6 9am-2pm

  • Sharing and getting feedback on designs and/or work completed. Additional information on grant funding for future STEM projects focused on Merrymeeting Bay.
