2014 Kachemak Bay Phytoplankton Conference

Phytoplankton serve as the base of the marine food web, providing essential ecological function for marine life and a key food item for aquaculture and mariculture alike. Phytoplankton may rapidly proliferate and “bloom” in the marine environment. While most algal blooms are beneficial, sometimes they can produce toxins and sicken humans and marine animals.

Within Kachemak Bay there are numerous groups studying phytoplankton and monitoring for potential harmful algal blooms (HAB). The Kachemak Bay Research Reserve is planning a workshop to, for the first time, bring together regional experts and the local community to share results. Further, while such studies are largely conducted independently, discussion about the current state of phytoplankton monitoring in Kachemak Bay, the unique challenges researchers face, and opportunities for increased coordination will be explored. Key experts will be brought in to help guide future direction of local phytoplankton research and monitoring.

The objectives of this workshop are to:

-Facilitate information exchange about phytoplankton and harmful algal blooms in Kachemak Bay;

-Encourage improved cooperation among researchers, agencies, and shellfish growers;

-Identify major impediments to research and monitoring, and the integration of this information into a coordinated network to address them;

-Determine next steps towards future coordinated interaction.

Workshop structure
Participants have been invited from research institutions, regulatory agencies, and the shellfish industry. They will give and receive presentations on a variety of topics related to phytoplankton and HAB research and monitoring.  Breakout sessions will be held to address key questions related to the objectives of this workshop, and to identify next steps needed.

Prior to the conference, please take a few minutes to complete a short survey about discussion topics. You will be redirected to the survey site after registration is complete:

The Coastal Training Program (CTP) offers practical, science-based information, tools, and skill training to professionals whose daily decisions impact coastal resources. The program is a national initiative within the National Estuarine Research Reserve system which provides coastal decision-makers with the knowledge and tools needed to address critical resource management issues of concern to local communities.

The KBNERR CTP maintains partnerships with local communities, agencies, and science experts, while collaborating with colleagues nationwide at other National Estuarine Research Reserves. The program consists of workshops, skill training, webinars, and technical assistance. Assessments of community needs, emerging coastal research, and coastal management issues help shape training and workshop priorities.
