Description

The focus of the Start2Farm Together Conference on March 17-18, 2013 in Raleigh, NC will be to continue planning for the needs and opportunities of beginning farmers of all types throughout the country. The conference will be a forum for goal setting and planning. All will be welcome to attend the meeting but we will not be holding workshops and sessions to teach skills directly to farmers. Registration ends March 8, 2013. Travel allowances are available.

The 3rd Annual Beginning Farmer and Rancher Conference will be a special meeting for beginning farmer and rancher trainers and service providers to create a national conversation about the needs and opportunities of beginning farmers and to develop guidance for future meetings.

The Beginning Farmer and Rancher Conference was developed by the Start2Farm.gov project in partnership with the American Farm Bureau Federation. Start2Farm.gov is a grant program under the USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture’s Beginning Farming and Ranching Development Program. The funding for this project will end after next year’s conference and continued funding for this program is unknown. Nevertheless, we want to continue to serve beginning farmers and ranchers and are therefore taking this opportunity to meet together with interested groups throughout the country to determine how best to move forward regardless of Farm Bill funding.

Travel grant applications for up to $1000 are available. Completed applications must be received by Start2Farm by March 1. You must register for the conference before submitting a travel grant application as there is information on the basic registration that we need to know to make decisions regarding funding grants. Travel grants will be granted on a rolling basis but all applicants will be notified of their status by March 5. To request a travel grant application, please email Jorie Porter at marjorie.porter@ars.usda.gov.

The meeting will be held at the North Carolina Farm Bureau office, which is located at 5301 Glenwood Avenue in Raleigh, N.C. Glenwood Avenue (also known as U.S. 70). The NCFB offices are located approximately a half-mile west of Crabtree Valley Mall. Phone 919-782-1705.
