2013 Closing the Achievement Gap Series

SUPPORTING YOUNG MEN OF COLOR IN THEIR PURSUIT OF A COLLEGE EDUCATION: Fulfilling President Obama's 2020 Goal for College Achievement
 
 
Keynote Speaker: Von Sheppard has served in education for the past nineteen years in three different districts and in the Office of Student Affairs at the University level. He has experience as a CEO, an Assistant Superintendent K-12, a Principal at the Elementary level, and Assistant Principal at the High School level. He has spoken throughout the country about strategies he and his staff used to take their students from 17% being at standard to 76% in three years. He currently speaks to Educators, Athletes and Business Professionals throughout the country. He joined Boulder Valley School District in the fall of 2008. Von oversees 20 Elementary Schools in the district.

 train to Metro Tech, 2 3 4 5 train to Borough Hall (walk one block East to Willoughby Street and make a left onto Jay Street), M R train to Lawrence Street-Metro Tech (walk one block North on Lawrence Street), Q B train to Dekalb Avenue (walk two blocks North toward Manhattan Bridge and make a left onto Myrtle Avenue into Metro Tech). 

By Train - Take Long Island Railroad to Pennsylvania Station, then transfer to a Brooklyn-bound A, C, 2, 3 train (see subway instructions above).Take Long Island Railroad to Flatbush Avenue-Atlantic Terminal in Brooklyn, then transfer to a Manhattan-bound B, M, Q, R, 2, 3, 4, 5 train (see subway instructions above) or walk North along Flatbush Avenue about 1 mile to Myrtle Avenue and make a left into MetroTech. Take Metro North Railroad to Grand Central Station in Manhattan, then transfer to a Brooklyn-bound 4, 5 train (see subway instructions above). Take New Jersey Transit to Pennsylvania Station in Manhattan, then transfer to a Brooklyn-bound A, C, 2, 3 train (see subway instructions above).



The Closing the Achievement Gap (CAG) is a speaker series and learning program sponsored by NYCDOE Division of Equity and Access and derives from the Empowering Boys Initiative (EBI).  The series is a component of the NYCDOE’s Empowering Boys Initiative and focuses on closing the achievement gap in Black and Latino male students by supporting schools through the identification, development and promotion of innovative and culturally competent support systems.  This year’s theme will be Cultural Relevant Pedagogy – Race, Practice and the Achievement Gap.  These sessions will equip parents, teachers and students with the necessary tools that are needed to engage, retain and encourage boys to succeed in the global economy.
