Isla Cocina Pilipina, Eagle Rock's “Thrilla From Manila” according to a recent review by LA Weekly, offers a menu full of contemporary takes on traditional Pilipino cuisine, mixed with old school dishes showcasing mom’s recipes. The Tolosa family has been in the restaurant business since 1998, with the launch of Isla Grill in Panorama City. House classics like the boneless bangus, chicken bbq, pork bbq, sisig, and crispy pata have carried over into the new menu along with contemporary specialties like vegan kare kare accompanied with their signature vegan bagoong, adobo wings, and bistek saltado. A bar featuring specialty drinks using distinct Pilipino flavors and ingredients is also in the works.
With a bigger space that includes a large dining room and banquet room, this family operating Isla version 2.0 has enough room to host birthday parties, christenings, mixers, meetings, fundraisers, and other special events. Catering is also available upon request.
Marvin Gapultos was born and raised in Los Angeles, California, and is a first-generation Filipino American and author of the celebrated food blog Burnt Lumpia. With his unique approach to Filipino cooking, Marvin became the first Filipino American food blogger to truly champion and showcase Filipino cuisine to a worldwide audience. In June of 2010, Marvin took his recipes to the next level and opened The Manila Machine—Los Angeles’ first gourmet Filipino food truck, and the first food truck to be completely owned and operated by food bloggers. Working the competitive food truck circuit on the streets of L.A., Marvin cut his teeth as a professional cook and helped to introduce Filipino food to the hungry masses of Southern California. In just a short amount of time, Marvin’s cooking gained both a loyal following, as well as critical acclaim.
In his debut book, The Adobo Road Cookbook, Marvin Gapultos demonstrates that Filipino cuisine can be prepared in any kitchen—from Manila to Los Angeles and everywhere in between. As a food blogger-turned-gourmet food trucker, Marvin interprets traditional Filipino flavors with equal parts kitchen savvy and street smarts—providing easy-to-follow, tried-and-true recipes that serve as a guide to the pleasures of Filipino cooking.
