Share 2012 COAST/UCOP Sleep Symposium

Event Details

Welcome to the Fifth Annual Obesity Symposium hosted by the UC Office of the President, UCSF Center for Obesity Assessment, Study and Treatment (COAST) and the UC Berkeley Atkins Center for Weight and Health!

This is one of the first scientific conferences to focus on the interactions between sleep, stress and obesity - our nation’s greatest epidemic and public health challenge. Topics will include how sleep and stress impact our metabolism and brain function, why adequate sleep and stress reduction may be the 21st century pillars of health – alongside a healthy diet and physical activity, and how sleep and stress may explain disparities in obesity risk.

Featured Speakers:

  • Eve Van Cauter, PhD – morning keynote speaker – Department of Medicine, University of Chicago, an internationally known investigator will explain how sleep disturbances maybe related to twin interacting epidemics, obesity and type 2 diabetes.
  • Ronald Dahl, MD – afternoon keynote speaker – School of Public Health, UC Berkeley, will inform us on the role of sleep and stress regulation on adolescent brain development.

A panel of additional speakers who are involved in cutting edge research on nutritional sciences, biological mechanisms, physical activity, stress, and disparities will discuss the evidence connecting sleep and stress with obesity.

  • Maurice Ohayon, MD, PhD – Stanford – The epidemiology of sleep and obesity
  • Erica Gunderson, PhD – Kaiser Oakland – Sleep and weight during pregnancy and postpartum
  • Michael Grandner, PhD – University of Pennsylvania – Sleep and disparities in obesity risk
  • Shawn Youngstedt, PhD – University of South Carolina – Sleep and physical activity
  • Susan Redline, MD, MPH – Harvard – Sleep and diet
  • Aric Prather, PhD – UC San Francisco – Sleep and stress
