Major, Chaplain William G. Linn Fisher was born in Orangeburg, South Carolina, in 1970, the youngest of four to the Rev. Dr. Carl and Miriam Fisher.
He spent his early childhood years in Malaysia, where his parents served as missionaries for 15 years and his father as Bishop in the Lutheran Church of Malaysia/Singapore. He has lived in Savannah, Georgia, Long Island, New York, and graduated from East Mecklenburg High in Charlotte, NC.
Rev. Fisher attended Lenoir-Rhyne College from 1989-1993, graduating with honors in Political Science. During his college years, he served as President of Theta Xi Fraternity and was Vice President of Pi Sigma Alpha Political Science Honor’s Society.
Immediately upon graduating from Lenoir-Rhyne, Rev. Fisher attended Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary from 1993-1997, where he received his Master’s of Divinity Degree. During his seminary education, he served as a hospital chaplain at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC, ministering to the needs of HIV and cancer patients and to the survivors of a U.S. Airways crash . Only one of three students chosen from Lutheran seminaries across the nation to serve abroad, Pastor Fisher served the Lutheran Church in N’gaoundere, Cameroon. With the support of his home congregation, Cross and Crown in Matthews, NC, he was instrumental in establishing a community library for the city. As a result of this partnership, the church in Cameroon was renamed Cross and Crown Lutheran.
Pastor Fisher served as a mission/church developer for two years at Amazing Grace Lutheran church in Waxhaw, NC before accepting a call to Abiding Peace Lutheran Church in Budd Lake, New Jersey. During his tenure up north, Rev. Fisher pioneered efforts for an extensive church building expansion program, was a visionary for an innovative youth ministry model, served as the chaplain for the Mt. Olive Township Police and Fire Departments, fostered outreach to community youth through special services and athletics, and provided pastoral care following the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center.
Chaplain Fisher joined the United States Air Force in April 2002 and was promoted to the rank of Major in April 2010. He served five years as an active duty chaplain at Shaw AFB, Sumter, SC, and Eielson AFB in Fairbanks, Alaska. He is currently stationed on full time active duty orders at Pope AFB in Fayetteville, NC. He provides extensive counseling to troops, couples, and families, is a chaplain to those serving on the flight-line and in the hospital, leads Suicide Intervention Training Workshops, and has been deployed to combat zones: Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Kuwait, Qatar, and Bahrain. Pastor Fisher has traveled to over 50 countries worldwide as a missionary and as a chaplain in the Armed Forces. He has received the Air Force Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Medal, and a Medal for Operation Enduring Freedom. He served as a Level 1 Trauma Center Chaplain at Carolinas Medical Center in downtown Charlotte, completed a two year program as a Clinical Pastoral Psychotherapist, working alongside military men and women who struggle with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
