Reflective Practice Training

Course Summary:

Reflective practice is an essential component of Infant-Family and Early Childhood Mental Health (IFECMH) and, for many years, has been known to benefit individuals and organizations in many disciplines. This 2-day reflective practice workshop will explore knowledge and skills necessary to provide reflective practice facilitation. Attendees will learn about the tenets and practices of capable reflection as well as the creation and maintenance of the reflective space. Additionally, there will be the opportunity to participate in listening, observation and responsive skills that comprise the reflective experience and to discuss ethical considerations that may arise when engaging in reflective practice. Lastly, this course is designed to build skills in facilitating the exploration of parallel processes and in respectfully addressing the complex emotional nature of Infant-Family Early Childhood Mental Health practice.

Learning Objectives:
1. Define reflective practice facilitation/consultation/supervision.
2. Identify and understand various components and practices of skillful and effective reflective practice facilitation.
3. Understand the impact of multiple influences and factors such as parallel processes on IFECMH practice and the IFECMH practitioner.
4. Demonstrate effective reflective practice facilitation skills.
5. Understand how to create and maintain an inviting, safe reflective space.
6. Learn to address issues and challenges in reflective practice facilitation (groups and individuals).
7. Understand ethical considerations in reflective practice.

Who should attend: This course is designed for professionals working in the field of early childhood mental health who are responsible for facilitating the reflective process with individuals and groups.

Schedule:

Day One:
8:30-9am: Registration
9-10:30am: Define reflective practice facilitation/consultation/supervision and its relation to IFECMH.
10:30-10:45am: Break
10:45am-12:00pm: Identify various components
and practices of skillful and effective reflective practice facilitation.
12-1pm: Lunch
1-2:30pm: Learn to create and maintain an inviting, safe reflective space.
2:30-2:45: Break
2:45-4:15: Learn to implement reflective practice facilitation skills.
4:15-4:30: Review and Wrap-Up

Day Two:

Speakers:

Debbie Duncan, LMFT, RPT-S, RPM is a Reflective Practice Mentor and has more than 20 years of experience working with children. She has taught, mentored, and consulted in areas of child therapy and early intervention. For more than eighteen years, she worked at Fresno County Children’s Mental Health, initially with court-ordered cases and later was co-located at the Assessment Center for Children. Debbie is a Registered Play Therapist/Supervisor, is endorsed as an Infant Family Early Childhood Mental Health Specialist/Reflective Practice Mentor, and is a Circle of Security Parenting Facilitator. Currently, Debbie consults with individuals and groups regarding early childhood therapy and reflective practice.

Julie Torok-Mangasarian, LMFT, RPT-S, RPM is a licensed marriage and family therapist and the Clinical Director of the California Psychological Institute in Fresno, CA. Julie is a Registered Play Therapist/Supervisor, infant mental health specialist, reflective practice mentor and certified educator of infant massage (CEIM). Julie specializes in the use of play to treat complex and developmental trauma in young children.

CEU’s: Attendance to this training meets the qualifications for 12 hours of continuing education credit for LMFT’s, LCSW’s, LPCC’s and/or LEP’s as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. Prov. # 131780. Certificates of completion are available to all participants and will be available at the time of training sign-out.

IMH Hours: Workshop is aligned with the California Training Guidelines and Personnel Competencies for Infant-Family and Early Childhood Mental Health (2009). 1-hours in Area A; 1-hour in Area C; 4-hour in Area G; 3-hours in Area H AND 2-hours Reflective Practice Supervision Participation = 12 hours

Co-hosted with the California Psychological Institute who is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists to sponsor continuing education for LMFT’s, LCSW’s, LPCC’s and/or LEP’s. California Psychological Institute maintains responsibility for this program/course content.
